Our beloved Lloyd Macaulay Powell shared his time with us for 89 years. He was born, October 11, 1932 in Sunbury, North Carolina to the late William Penn Powell and Cora Costen-Powell. He was the youngest of 10 siblings, and was called to rest on Friday, March 18, 2022. At a young age, Lloyd joined St. John AME Zion Church in Sunbury, North Carolina and was a lifelong Zionite. He was affectionately known as Caulay or Uncle Mac. He received his education in Gates County, North Carolina and graduated from T.S. Cooper High School in 1951. Lloyd was drafted into The United States Army in 1954 and concluded his military career in 1956. It was also in Sunbury, where he met his bride of 64 years, Rosa M. (Lassiter) Powell. They were both members of St. John AME Zion Church. They were united in matrimony on June 29, 1957.
Upon moving to Portsmouth, Virginia in 1957, they transferred their membership from St. John AME Zion Church to Brighton Rock AME Zion Church, where Lloyd served as a Trustee for many years. Mac worked as a truck driver at Valley Foods Services & Poultry, Overnight Transportation, and Roadway Express, where he later retired in June, 1994 after 38 years of service. Lloyd was also a dedicated member of the Teamster Union, Teamster Retiree Chapter #822, and American Legion Post 190.
In 1983, Lloyd and Rosa moved to Chesapeake, Virginia and shortly thereafter, moved their membership from Brighton Rock AME Zion Church to St. Thomas AME Zion Church, where he was a member of the Willing Workers Ministry. Lloyd enjoyed fishing and he loved to garden. He would grow all kinds of vegetables, such as; corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, hot peppers, green beans, and squash. Once harvested, he would give them to whomever inquired.
Lloyd was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He will be adorned in memory by his loving wife Rosa M. Powell, two daughters; Myra Powell and Cynthia Powell-White, four granddaughters; Roxy Powell, Cammie White, Lakita Edwards and Chamia White and six great grandchildren; Zariah Sayles, Cailee White, Steven Samonte Jr., Anthony Cargill Jr., Amir Samonte, and Naeem Samonte, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and his St. Thomas family.
