Elsie Naomi Wiggins

Sunrise: May 27, 1952

Sunset: November 1, 2023

On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Elsie Naomi (Dawson) Wiggins, 71, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away quietly at home with her family by her side. Heaven opened its gates and received her home. Elsie was born on May 27, 1952 in South Hampton County, VA to her predeceased parents Elsie Lee (Deloatch) Dawson and Henry Dawson, Sr.

Elsie was raised in Suffolk, VA where she attended John F. Kennedy (JFK) High School and Suffolk High School. While at JFK, she was very active on the Cheering Squad and the Drill Team. She also attended Tidewater Community College.

But, her family dynamic changed when she loss the love of her life (William ‘Billy’ Gales), and subsequent to that, she lost her mother (Elsie Lee). After losing her mother, Elsie became the guardian to her two young teenage brothers, Ronald and Earl Wendell, while also caring for her two beautiful young daughters, Antondria (LaLa) and Marcell (Marcy).

Elsie was no stranger to hard work. And to attest to that, she worked for over 45 years in various positions, including but not limited to, at General Electric, Gwaltney Foods, and the Virginia Department of Transportation where she retired from on December 4, 2020. She also was a School Crossing Guard and a Shuttle Bus driver for the Airport. Working was never ever something she did not do; rather, she, being the very hard worker she was, did whatever she had to do to provide for her family, and she did it very well.

She was baptized at a very early age, and most recently, before her failing health, a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA. At New Bethel, Elsie served as a member of the Usher Board and the Jubilant Praise Ministry.

She is survived, deeply missed, and adored by her loving daughters Antondria Jones (Kelvin) and Vivian Bender (Darreck). Elsie will be forever cherished and remembered by her four grandchildren, Antondre Bender (Jasmine), Kelvin Jones Jr, Leilah Jones, and William Jones. Great grandchildren, Nathaniel and Jonathan Bender. Her memory will forever be cherished by her siblings and their families; Betty Ann (Dawson) Rountree, Alease Dawson, Henry Dawson, Jr (Cynthia), Elizabeth (Dawson) Bullock, Ronald Dawson (Lucy), Earl Dawson (Patricia), and endearing cousin/brother Alfred Lee Turner (Rita).

Left to cherish her life, love, and legacy are her nieces, nephews and their families, Eddie Richardson Jr, Tonya Richardson, Antron Richardson, Deborah Ann Roundtree, Michael Roundtree, Gabriel Roundtree, Lashawnda Dawson, Christie Dawson, Ronald Earl Dawson, Ciara Whitaker, Sherri Dawson, Brandon Dawson, Larry Bullock, Gary Bullock, Ebony Hudson, Anthony Sweeny, Corey Colander, Jackie Clark, Ronda Dawson, TC Dawson, Jackie Smith, Dearl Dawson, Tracy Gales, Allen Ebron, Michael Ebron and a host of other family and relatives. Her loving and unwavering memory will be treasured by (Aunt) Jackie Cross and countless others she called friends.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4 KJV)
