Brenda Latrice Sykes Carpenter was called home on 13 October 2021.
She was born on March 1, 1974 in Chesapeake, Virginia to Lutricia (Sykes) Battiste. Though an only child, Brenda spent her formative years with her cousins Latasha (Sykes) Dowe and Shawn Sykes who she considered as siblings. She graduated from Great Bridge High School (1992) and continued her studies at Old Dominion University (2000), achieving a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Services.
Her career path took her many places- most recently as a driver for Lyft- combining her enthusiasm for driving and people engagement.
She married Larry Carpenter in 2004.
Brenda loved the Lord. Her spiritual journey included membership at the Metropolitan Seven Day Adventist Church in Maryland until relocating to the Tidewater area.
Willful, passionate and fiercely loyal, Brenda was generous with both her time and love. She was known for helping strangers and friends alike. She was most happy being outdoors fishing, listening to music or laughing heartily with family and friends. Most of all, she loved FAMILY.
She is preceded in death by her beloved grandfather, the late Reverend Samuel P. Sykes, Sr.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her mother Lutricia, step father Cyrano Battiste, former spouse Larry Carpenter, grandmother Neomia H. Sykes, aunts Altheia Downing ( Andre Sr.), Phyllis Brooks (Charles), Patricia Sykes, Paulette Sykes, uncles Samuel Sykes, Jr (Dee), Ricky Sykes (Leona) and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

October 20, 2021 at 11:57 amBrenda, my beautiful sister and friend. No one ever compared to you and no one ever will. My heart is sad that we won’t get to sit on the beach in rocking chairs as old ladies and watch our grandkids play as we joked about when we were babies ourselves. I have been playing one of our favorite songs as kids that we would sing in the back of our mother’s cars as they drove us to the mall and other places on Saturday mornings. Words can’t express how much I miss you and how much there was still left to say and do. I love you so much. I will be there for your mother so please don’t worry because, I’ve got her. Now you rest you beautiful soul and we will see you soon when God says so.
Sykes Family & Friends, my prayers are that you find peace and comfort during this time. That you choose to remember how Brenda touched your life, enhanced it, and that you smile through the tears.
Peace and Blessings to you!
