Joycelyn Claudetta Felton

Sunrise: March 26, 1937

Sunset: December 30, 2022

Joycelyn (Joyce) Claudetta Felton was born March 26, 1937 in Hertford, NC to Joseph Calvin Gordon and Eunice Hoffler. In the early morning hours of December 30, 2022, Joyce slipped away quietly to her heavenly home in the loving and comforting presence of her family.

Joyce attended and graduated from Winfall High School in Perquimans County, NC. After high school, she married the love of her life, Willie, whom she would joyfully spend the next 60 years with until his passing  in 2015. Shortly after they married, they moved to New York where she worked as a school cafeteria attendant. She eventually secured employment with the New York City traffic division as a traffic officer. Many citations were dispersed, which led to her being recognized as the only traffic officer who wrote the most tickets on the department’s new system.  She enjoyed 20+ years in this position until her retirement.

Joyce loved her family, cooking, and shopping at high end stores to catch bargains and daily walks. She also loved sitting in her sunroom admiring her many plants and sitting on her front porch admiring her yard. Joyce Felton was a kind, strong, joyful, smart, funny, loving woman. She had an infectious laugh and a fierce love for her family. She was playful and loved to joke around with her family. She loved to people watch and was a great neighbor. She greatly cherished her close friends whom she thought of as her children and family, including Susan Barbar, Monica Richardson, Vickie Dunn, Alice Herrin and Annette and Larry Saunders. She especially enjoyed going out to lunch and catching up with them.

Joyce is predeceased by husband Willie Felton, Sr., daughter Carol Cason, granddaughter Shawana Revelle, and granddaughter LeNae Dew.

Joyce leaves to cherish her memories: four (4) daughters Myra (Richard) Fain of Edenton, NC; Linda Dew of Raleigh, NC; Sharon Napier of Suffolk, VA; Sheila Felton of Suffolk, VA, and two (2) sons Joseph Felton of Hampton, VA; and Willie (Danielle) Felton of Hampton, VA; 10 grandchildren LaCole Felton, Latasha “Sweet Pea” Jones, Leah (Cameron) Dew, Dr. Nicole (Dr. James) Mathis, Shanequa Felton, Anderson Dew, Michael Allen Jr., Kyheem Crump, Nakia (Payton) Phillip, and Joseph Fain; 18 great-grandchildren, one (1) brother, Melvin Gordon and three (3) sisters-in-law, Marion (Sidney) Johnson, Thelma Lark, and Ruth Holley; and a host of friends, all of who loved her dearly and will miss her so very much.
