Precious in the sight of God is the death of one of his saints: whereas God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to take from our midst, our son, brother, nephew, cousin, coworker and friend.
Damon A Garrett, 51, passed away at midday, Saturday, April 27, 2024, from a catastrophic medical event. He was in intensive care at Sentara Norfolk General for a short time before succumbing to his medical emergency event.
Damon was born on November 18, 1972, in Portsmouth, Virginia to Roderick Coles and Linda Garrett. He lived in Portsmouth, until he moved to Raleigh, NC for his middle school years. He attended Centennial Baptist Church and accepted the Lord as his savior while attending church with his maternal grandparents (Thomas and Alice Garrett). Damon was an avid Redskins football fan since his childhood and would follow them closely his whole life. After moving to Raleigh, he grew and thrived. He graduated from Garner High School in 1990 and soon served in the Army. After returning from the military, he spent some time in Fayetteville, NC and Raleigh, NC.
Damon had a cadre of close friends with whom he traveled and enjoyed various social scenes. He also enjoyed spending time with his paternal relatives in Fayetteville and Portsmouth. Damon loved to cook and loved to eat. He was also a serial napper. Damon was fastidious about home cleanliness and maintenance. He also liked to host small cookouts for his family.
Damon found employment with several jobs until he landed with ESKA Inc. He had just celebrated his 20th year with ESKA. From all reports, he was truly a valued and loyal employee. He loved his job and sought to do the very best job for the company.
Left to cherish precious memories are his heartbroken mother, Linda Garrett Dean (Reggie); sister, Christine Dean of Raleigh, NC; aunts, Cheryl and Darlene Garrett of Chesapeake, VA; father, Roderick Coles (Deborah) and sisters, Denita Coles and Ramona Coles-Shotwell of Fayetteville, NC; aunt, Vanessa Powe of Chesapeake, VA; cousin, Shavonia Powe of Chesapeake, VA; uncles, Elvin Gay of Portsmouth, VA, David (Valerie) and Kenneth (Wanda) Garrett of Portsmouth, VA; Pamela Garrett of Falls Church, VA, Nea and Kayla of Virginia Beach, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

June 16, 2024 at 8:01 amMy condolences to the Garrett family. I’m completely in shock to find out my very best friend has passed on. I met Garrett in the summer of 1999 in Fayetteville NC. Garrett always sent me pictures of his Sunday dinner’s with sweet tea and let me know of his nap times! I knew something was wrong when he didn’t text me back April 23rd and thereafter. My God mom looked for Garrett and found him here, My Heart sank to the floor finding out my worst fear had come true. You’re gone and I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye or come to see your beautiful smile again and let you know that you are loved. We made plans for you to come to Texas to visit me, I don’t understand what’s happened, but you’ll forever be loved and missed. You’re in my heart, thoughts and prayers, always. I have truly lost a beautiful human being in my life. Thank you for sharing your life and journey with me Garrett(My TuttiFrutti, always) I LOVE YOU ALWAYS and FOREVER, your TuttiCakes-Trinity. 🕊️
