Vivian Hampton McDonald, known to family as Mom, Mother, Grandma Vivian, and Aunt Viv, was born on May 4, 1939, to the union of Zebedee Hampton and Mira Ann O’Bryant Hampton in Troy, Alabama. She was the third born of three girls. Her parents and middle sister, Mary Jewel Hall, preceded Vivian in death.
Vivian often acknowledged her Christian faith in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, gratefully boasting of her love for God and His love for her. Vivian completed her formal education in the Monterey, California Public School System. Upon graduation she moved to Chicago, Illinois. After relocating to Chicago, Vivian met and married Dr. Glenn Balfour McDonald Sr. To this union was born Marcia Anita and Glenn Balfour Jr. Vivian was employed by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) as a Bus Operator and later as a trainer. After retiring from the CTA, she decided to move to Virginia to be closer to her children.
Vivian absolutely loved family! Being a mom was her pride and joy. She cherished her role as a grandmother and loved visits from her great-grandchildren as they spent quality time around food and laughter. Frequent trips to visit with her eldest sister, Marie, and brother-in-law, Gene (who preceded her in death) were highlights for her. Nieces and nephews were always in for a treat with Aunt Viv’s hilarious ways.
Vivian was very social, and did not allow any grass to grow under her feet, especially while residing in Chicago. Bowling, cooking, dancing, traveling, and playing card games were some of her favorite pass-time activities. Vivian remained physically active, often taking long walks into her elderly age.
On Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 4:29 pm, our dear Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend departed from this earth. Though the acceptance of this was challenging, our hearts are comforted knowing she is now at eternal peace with her Heavenly Father.
Vivian leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Glenn Jr. (Doris) of Sulfolk, VA; one daughter, Marcia of Portsmouth, VA; one granddaughter, Lady Brytish (Pastor Anthony) Thomas of Hazel Crest, IL; three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Kiersten, and Kaci Thomas of Hazel Crest, IL; one sister, Marie McGinnis of Eaton, Ohio; seven nieces: Brenda Hall of Syracuse, NY, Chaplain Judy (Pastor Anthony) Nicholson of Indianapolis, IN, Lady Alice (Pastor James) Suddith of Troy, AL, Marylin (Anthony) Walker of Bloomington, IN, Sandra Hall of Alpharetta, GA , Debbie (Jimmy) Childress of Indian Land SC, and Chris (Demetrius) Robertson of Waldorf, MD; 17 great nieces and nephews; two special friends Betty Samuel and Peggy Myers of Chicago, IL, and a host of family and friends who will greatly miss her.
