Sherman Lee Wright

Sunrise: January 14, 1955

Sunset: May 4, 2024

Mr. Sherman “Chico” Wright passed away on May 4, 2024, after a brief illness at Leigh Memorial Hospital. He was born January 14, 1955, in Portsmouth, VA. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Adlee and James Wright; brother, Palmer White; and his special Uncle, Lesley Wright.

Chico attended Portsmouth Public Schools and graduated from I.C Norcom. He also attended Tidewater Community College and Shaw University. Sherman went into the Air Force as a young man and was honorably discharged in 1977. He went on to work for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for over thirty-six years, retiring in 2014 as a General Forman-Supervisor Shop 11. Even after years of retirement, Chico couldn’t sit still and went back to work at Norfolk International airport as an Air Cargo handler for several years.

Chico was a family man and loved to travel. He was known to jump in his car and travel to visit family and friends out of town at a moment’s notice. He loved the open road. Some called him the “Traveling Man”. He loved spending time with family and friends. Chico had several hobbies and was a man of action. He was an avid music collector, loved taking pictures and videos, and was a handyman extraordinaire. He knew his way around cars and home repairs. He was a stickler for time well spent. Sherman was a Deacon and active member of The United House of Prayer for all People.

He is survived by his children, William Charles (Danielle) of Portsmouth VA; Sherman Wright of Killeen, TX; Lesley Wright of Portsmouth VA; and Justin Barnes (Schameka) of Portsmouth VA; grandchildren, Khari Charles; De’Antre Charles; Shermiya Wright, Jeremiah Wright, David Barnes; John Barnes; brothers, Carl Wright; James Wright, sisters, Bettie Wright; Bettina Grayson; special nieces and nephews, Christina Paxton (Tony); Nicole Grayson; Calvin Grayson; James Wright and a host of other cousins, relatives, and friends.

Sherman will be greatly missed, but we celebrate the eternal life that he has entered into with Jesus.
