Irene Green Knight

Irene Green Knight, a devout servant of the Lord, was called to her eternal rest on April 18, 2024, at the age of 92. Her departure from this earthly realm took place in Portsmouth, VA amidst the loving embrace of her cherished family. Irene lived a life marked by humble service, embodying the virtues of compassion & unwavering faith.

Irene Midgette was born on Oct. 09, 1931, in Hyde County, N.C. to James Mayhugh Midgette Sr. and Bonine Louise Spencer Midgette. Irene’s journey led her to Norfolk VA at the tender age of 16. While there she met her beloved Willie Morris” Pop” Green Sr. & united in holy matrimony. Together they created a family with their sons, Anthony A. Green, Willie Morris Stitt, & Willie Morris Green Jr. At the age of 28, Irene surrendered her heart fully to the Lord. Her life became a testament to his grace. She was a pilar of strength and devotion within her church communities, from the early days at Moton Revival in Norfolk, VA to her assistance in establishing the usher board at Holy light new under the guidance of Bishop Caruth. Her home was filled with love & grace, homecooked meals, hand created wardrobe & the sweet melodies of her self -taught piano & organ music. Irene & Pop Green remained as one until the Lord called him home in October of 1987. As she continued to serve the Lord, in 1992 Irene found love again when she met & married Earnest Knight Sr. Together, they continued to walk in faith until his passing in December of 2005. In 2006 Irene began a fellowship at Mt. Sinai RZUA under the stewardship of Reverend David Johnson Sr., where she served as a member of the mother’s board.

Irene now joins the heavenly choir alongside her parents James Mayhugh Midgette Sr. & Bonine Louise Spencer Midgette. Her first husband Willie M. “Pop” Green Sr. & her second husband Earnest Knight who both loved & cherished her. Her Father’s siblings Willie, Sammie, Harry, Jimmie, Willie Gray, Carroll, Emma, Ethel, Gladys, Mary, Ada, Mabel, Ellen, Annette, & Inez. Her Mother’s siblings James, Edgar, David, Colon, Willie Lee, Georgeann, & Leon Paternal Grandparents, Jodie Midgette & Annie Young, Maternal grandparents, Marybelle Spencer Bowden, & Charles Spencer. Her Brother James Mayhugh Midgette Jr., Nieces Bonita “Bones” Johnson Bowie, Denise Lovick, Bernadine “Plukey” Elliott, Nephews Cornelius Green Sr., Albert “Alboot” Raymond Johnson, Great Nephew Rodney Elliott, Brother-in-law Harrold White of Jacksonville, NC, Carlise & Frederick Gatling, Booney Mabry, Elmer Mabry, Milton Mabry, Chrissy McNeal. William Riddick, & great-great grandson Syncere of Portsmouth, Virginia.

Her departure is mourned by the natural world as well as all of god’s creation which she held in deep respect & gratitude. Left to cherish her memory & continue her legacy of loving service are her maternal aunt Eara Marie Canady of Hollis, NY. Her older sister & nephew Elsie Templa M. & Byron Emil Johnson of Lansdale PA. Her younger sister Shelia Lee M. Johnson White of Jacksonville, NC, Her nephews Thomas M. Johnson III of Jacksonville, NC, Carlton Lee Jonson of Philadelphia, PA, Edmond T. Lolly Sr. of Philadelphia, PA, Her nieces Alesia Darlene J. Julius of Richlands, NC, & Shelia Michielle Johnson of Jacksonville NC, & Her nephew James Mayhugh Midgette III of SanDiego, CA, Her goddaughter Rosetta & (Arthur “A.J.”) Sneed.

Her son Anthony A. Green (Fiancé’ Chamise Pierce), Antoinette Franklin, granddaughter Karolyn Franklin, great-grandchildren Jameikha, Tanasha, Amari, & Journey two great-great grandchildren Mason & Zuri.

As we commemorate the life of Irene Green Knight, let us do so with hearts full of gratitude for the blessings she bestowed upon us, the lessons she imparted, & the unwavering faith she demonstrated. Her life was a living psalm, a hymn of humble devotion, & a prayer of love that will echo through the ages.
