Herbert Grice, Jr., son of late Herbert and Nellie Grice was born October 1, 1937 in Dothan Alabama. Herbert was the oldest child of six children. He was raised in a Christian home and graduated from Carver High School. As a young adult, he was a member of the Church of God in Christ where he served as a junior deacon. Shortly after high school, he joined the United States Army as an infantry soldier. After his distinguished military service, he decided to follow his other siblings and moved to Brooklyn, New York. It was in New York where he started his family. Herbert had a total of six children. He always had a love for public safety, so he joined the New York City Police Department. Herbert prided himself in looking sharp and dapper whether it was in his military uniform, or police uniform. His love for entrepreneurship led him to start his own limo service with his then wife, Helen Grice. Later he owned his own yellow medallion cab service in New York City. Owning a medallion cab was a tremendous accomplishment, especially for an African-American. Herbert Grice, Jr. later retired from the Hampton City School System. Herbert loved sports. He lived a life full of joy and was known for his entertaining stories. He also played softball and loved to travel. Herbert was an active member of Greater Joy Church of God In Christ in Newport News, VA under the leadership of Pastor Ron Hardy. Hebert loved to visit his hometown during class reunion time but he took his last journey home to Heaven on October 1, 2023 to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Herbert was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara; his brothers, Jessie, David, and Charlie and his daughter, Mary Francis. He leaves to cherish his memories, his current wife, Ida; Herbert’s four sons, Duwan Grice, Wayne (Jackie) Grice, Herbert (Lynn) Grice, Lamont Mitchell, and daughter, Patricia (Angelo) Fischer; two sisters, Mary Grice and Ida Best, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins. Herbert Grice, Jr. will be missed by all of the lives that he touched.
