Eugene Burks, Sr, 84, of 1008 Wilcox Avenue, Portsmouth, Virginia 23704, transitioned on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Born in Stuttgart, Arkansas on January 9, 1936, he was the son of the late Henry Burks and Bertha Burks. He and his siblings were raised by their mother sister, Aunt Aretha. After 20 years of faithful and dedicated service in the Navy, he retired in 1970 and became self-employed as sole owner of B&B Stores and Burks’s Cleaners. He was a person who desired to stay active and busy, and found retirement boring, therefore he continued to work and started a food vending service, lawn service for those in the community and was a member of the Portsmouth Sport Fishermen, Inc. He believed in hard work and that it should start at a young age. He believed in saving and spending wisely to prepare you for a good future.
He leaves to cherish his memories five daughters Marilynn Carpenter, Michelle Glasper (Keith), Melinda Skeete (Cecil), Teresa Cooper (Keith), Bridget Diaz (Curtis), and three sons Eugene Burks, Jr (Carrie), Kenneth Burks (Kisha), Vashod Burks and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who enjoyed being around his humorous spirit. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at Metropolitan Funeral Home, 5605 Portsmouth Boulevard, Portsmouth, Virginia 23701. Elder Jonathan Powell will deliver the message of comfort.

March 11, 2020 at 9:31 amDear Family; I was happy for the opportunity to know your Dad & witness the relationship he had with my grandfather. They were good buddies & in their golden years, relied on each other’s company. The laughs I had watching them joke each other in conversation where they may have disagreed on a particular subject matter! They enjoyed some trips together & just some sit around the porch easy days & maybe little of nothing to talk about., Thank You Mr. Burks for being a true friend. He knew I & my siblings, appreciated his watchful care concerning my Grandfather. All is well Marilyn, Michell, brothers & sisters. May the Holy Spirit that lives within bring you comfort during this time of sorrow! Rest In Peace Mr Burks…no more pain!
