Deacon Larry D. Ashwood, Sr.

Deacon Larry D. Ashwood, Sr. was a lifelong Christian and educator who dedicated his life to public service. He was born on November 15, 1951 and the oldest son of Bernice Jenkins and raised by her and his stepfather Sherman Jenkins in Helena, Arkansas.  He was a loving family man for his seven siblings Dianna, Michael (deceased), Brenda (deceased), Sherman (deceased), Vanessa (deceased), Lisa, and Melissa.   

After Larry Sr graduated from High School, he enlisted into the U.S. Army serving for over 30 years of honorable service he retired as a Master Sergeant. During his Army Reserves’ time he attended Tidewater Community College, Norfolk State & Old Dominion University.  For more than 20 years, Larry taught at the U.S. Coast Guard, Norfolk Public Schools and at Tidewater Community College.  

He is survived by his wife, Deaconess Barbara Ashwood, son Larry D. Ashwood Jr. and step children William C. Saunders and Andre B. Small.

    My heart goes out to my extended family as we fondly remember our esteemed cousin, Larry. He was an inspirational man who was unrivaled in his caring for us. He made us laugh and brought us joy.

    Larry carried on the tradition of our families’ legacy of military service by serving in the U.S. Army. He was one of our leaders and one of our soldiers. Larry will be remembered with the highest regards in our family, forever.

    We are truly saddened upon the loss of Larry, our Gentleman Soldier, friend and brother-in-law. Deaconess Barbara, Larry Jr, and family, our hearts are with you and may the sorrow you feel in your heart lighten by the love that surrounds you and may the love that surrounds you help you through the days ahead. Please take comfort, he is an angel with his arms wrapped around each of you and, as always, he will continue to watch over you.     Cousin Larry will be dearly missed. He loved the Lord and was a witness of God’s goodness. He loved to sing and pray at family gatherings. I thank God for the Life of Larry-Well Lived!
