Willie Mae “Shorty” Peterson drifted into her eternal rest on January 9, 2021. Her husband, Howard Peterson; beloved sister, Jessie Mae Quash; father, Lee Shaw and loving mother, Lemon Robinson have been waiting to welcome her home.
Willie Mae was born July 1, 1929 in Swan Quarter, North Carolina. Although she was the youngest daughter, she was the most outspoken and it caused her to look for excitement constantly. Her quest for adventure led her to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 15. Even though she was usually the shortest in the room, her vivacious spirit garnered the nickname “Goodtime Shorty” because she was always the life of the party! After working several odd jobs throughout the years, she decided on a career in the nursing field. During that time, she discovered a love of driving that would last into her later years. After adopting her only daughter in 1969, she eventually made Portsmouth her home.
Whether she was called “Shorty”, “Shortstuff”, or “Short Short”, Willie Mae will always be remembered for her bright spirit, affectionate nature, infectious laugh, delicious Southern cooking skills and her incessant love of driving. She leaves to cherish her amazing memories, her daughter, Lisa Peterson; her grandsons, Charles and Robert Peterson; her conversation-loving granddaughter, Shaneva Jones and her granddaughter – twin, Justina Peterson; her very special great-granddaughter, Ianya Peterson; her energetic great-grandson, Christian Todd and newest member of the bunch, her fun-loving great grandson, Elijah Jones. Last but certainly not least, her fur baby, Clingy, who misses her dearly. Her survivors are all of Portsmouth
