William Hoytt Hines, Jr., lovingly known as “Junior,” was born on October 15, 1959, to Lillian Florence Hines and the late William Hoytt Hines, Sr. He peacefully departed this life for his eternal home on February 28, 2025.
From an early age, Junior was a dedicated member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he was baptized under the leadership of his Pastor, Rev. Dr. Sidney Foster, Jr. He actively participated in church activities, attending Sunday School, singing in the choir, serving on the Junior Usher Board, and attending Vacation Bible School and revivals.
Junior graduated from Manor High School in 1979. During his youth, Junior excelled in karate, earning a black belt in Taekwondo and impressing many with his ability to break bricks with his hands. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as watching television. His favorites included old westerns, mysteries, and crime dramas. He also had a passion for his specialty meals, particularly Jamaican, Caribbean, and seafood dishes.
Junior pursued a career as an electrical engineer and also showcased his culinary talents as the head cook at Charlie’s Seafood and as a cook at the Blue Fox. He worked alongside his father who was chief engineer at Norfolk Community Hospital and spent a period of time working for the City of Portsmouth.
Junior cherished the time spent with family and friends, maintaining close connections with loved ones through frequent phone calls.
Junior leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his son Levondell Wright (Kira Harris-Wright), his mother Florence Hines, his siblings Vernon Lee (Marie), Wanda Jean (Benny), Florence Lynette Fox-Blackwell (Robert, deceased and Jimmie, deceased), and Trevonia Shenelle (Leroy); his four grandchildren: Myuri, Lavonya, Anisa, Brielle, two step-grandchildren N’Quavia and Brookelynn, and great-grandchild Marianna; and a special friend Cathy Smith.
May Junior’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.
