Wesley Earl Bishop Sr., lovingly nicknamed ‘Uncle Wes’, peacefully transitioned on Tuesday,  June 10, 2025.

Wesley was born on September 4, 1956 to the late Raymond Bishop and Lucy Allen Bishop. Uncle Wes grew up in Mount Hermon where he spent his early years in Portsmouth and Chesapeake Public Schools, and later graduated from Natchitoches Central High School in Louisiana. Following graduation, Wesley proudly served in the United States Army from 1974-1980. Wesley would then lead a fulfilling career in various shipyards in the Hampton Roads area, Jelly belly in Pleasant Prairie, WI, and the Coast Guard in Maryland as a Marine Electrician. Wesley later retired from his work as a High Voltage Electrician for the Naval Public Works at the Naval Base in Norfolk, VA. Wesley completed a U.S. Army Signal School Lineman Course and would be awarded Norfolk Naval Shipyard Superior Achievement and Cost Reduction Program Awards, Nuclear Quality Control Awards and other honors from the Department of the Navy.

Uncle Wes’ joyous and witty nature drew people to him, fostering lifelong friendships and filling every room he entered with laughter. Wesley always had a spirit for adventure which was prevalent in his Presidency of the Chariot Wheels Motorcycle Club. Above all, Uncle Wes cherished his family and loved to celebrate at any family get-together or cookout; always welcoming everyone with a cheerful smile.

Wesley was preceded in death by his siblings Raona B. Godfrey (Winona [d], Steven [d], Maria, Crystal, and James) and Sandy L. Bishop (Sonya, Sandy, and Amy) as well as his mother-in-law Doretha P. Perkins, father-in-law Walter L. Perkins and sister-in-law Kathleen P. Banks. Wesley’s memory will be forever treasured by his wife, Sandra Perkins Bishop, and his children Leslie L. Bishop-Chavis (Lutrell), Marquis L. Perkins (Rheanna), and Wesley E. Bishop Jr.; his grandchildren Jeloni Moore, Angel Hilliard, Ty Chavis, Julianna Whitaker, Saniyah Chavis, Paloma Muhsin, Marshawn Whitaker, Zoei Bishop; his siblings Ronald S. Bishop and Lillian B. Ransome (Anthony, Raymond, and Tina); his sister-in-law, Janice P. Davis (Dwayne); and a host of nieces, nephews and “bonus children” – Camye, Harvey, Nickie, Delvin, Keary, Shenae, Mechellene, Michael, Rena, Yvette, Stefan and many other loving family and friends.

Uncle Wes’ legacy of love, joy, and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

I am at a lost for words. Wesley was my brother from another mother. Both he and my (late) brother Tyrone McIntyre, were inseparable. I will never forget and will always cherish how both he and Sandra were there for my brother during his illness and his transition. Love always.
