Vivian Arnel Smith, born on February 24, 1935, in the heart of Norfolk, Virginia, was a shining light in the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. The cherished daughter of the late Nancy Antwine and Berline Drew, she was lovingly embraced by her community, and she thrived in the halls of Norfolk Public Schools, graduating with pride from Booker T. Washington High School of Norfolk, Virginia.
On that fateful day, April 21, 1958, Vivian joined her life with Lionel Smith of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, embarking on an incredible journey of love that would last an astonishing 66 years. Two families intertwined their destinies, forever bonded in a tapestry of shared experiences and unwavering support.
Vivian’s thirst for knowledge and her undying commitment to helping others led her to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1963, a role she embraced with passion. Her unyielding spirit drove her to expand her horizons, and in September 1982, she proudly achieved her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). Even in her retirement, her passion for nursing endured, and she imparted her wisdom and love for the profession to future generations as an educator at the College and Career Academy at Pruden in Suffolk, VA.
A devoted member of Solid Rock Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, Vivian’s heart was a wellspring of service as she shone as both Deaconess and the beloved main organist. Her faithful commitment and unwavering dedication resonated deeply with all who knew her; she was a beacon of love and support, forever cherished in their hearts.
Vivian leaves behind a legacy of warmth and love, which will forever echo in the lives of her devoted husband, Lionel Smith; her two beloved sons, Jeffery Smith (Sharon Smith) of Carrollton, Virginia, and Darnel Smith of Suffolk, Virginia; and her four adoring grandchildren, Jeremy, Raven, Ramaro, and Ravonda Smith. She is also remembered fondly by her step-sister, Laurell Antwine, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends who were fortunate enough to experience her grace and kindness.
Though Vivian has joined her late parents, Nancy Antwine and Berline Drew, and her step-sister, Monica Antwine, in eternal rest, her spirit will forever nourish the bonds she forged, lighting the way for those left behind.
