Virginia Whitney-Greene

Sunrise: March 23, 1953

Sunset: October 13, 2022

On Thursday, October 13th, 2022, Virginia Whitney-Greene was called to rest. Virginia was born on March 23, 1953, in Pueblo, Colorado. She graduated from South High School class of 72 in Pueblo Colorado and moved to Norfolk, VA in 1975, where she found the career she would later retire from at Dominion Power. She worked for Dominion for 26 years where she would meet her forever partner and soul mate, John Greene.

She met John in 1993 and the two married on December 31, 1999.  Virginia was predeceased in death by her parents, Walter Whitney Sr. and Opal Whitney, her sisters, Ruby Whitney and Ola Whitney-Austin, her brothers Walter Whitney Jr., Jessie Whitney, and Gus Whitney, brother-in-law, James Sanford Jr., nephew Torrance Sanford, and God granddaughter, Deatrice Lawrence.

Virginia leaves behind a loving and wonderful husband, John Greene of over 22 years. She leaves to cherish her only child LaShawn Whitney whom she adored.  She leaves two grandchildren, LaVonte’ Whitney and Shanya Whitney-Morrow, who emphatically referred to her as “Granny!!”.  She also leaves to cherish four sisters, Delores Sanford, Annette Whitney Walker, Charlotte Whitney, and Sharon Ferdinand, and one Brother, David Whitney. A host of nieces and nephews and her loving extended family.

Virginia served as a friend, teacher, counselor, and “mother”.   Although she had one biological child, she served as a mother to many:  James, Tony, Kindelle, Dionne, Shelia, Shelly, LaTasha, Woody, Charnitta, Charnetta, Heiress, LaNora and her baby Camari. She prided herself on being an anchor in the community and this was displayed by the countless amount of people she impacted in life. Whether it was lending a listening ear, cooking for an army, showing up in times of need, making sure everyone knew holidays were special, or just showing love and support when the community needed it.  Her impact was felt by everyone she touched.

The love she had for her daughter was unmatched. She was not only a mother to LaShawn, she was her best friend, confidant, homegirl, road dog, shopping partner and so much more. The way she loved her grandchildren is sacred. First, LaVonte’, whom she cared for as if he were her own child, second, Shanya who was her heart. She and Shanya were so close that they became known as “GOLDEN GIRLS”.

Virginia spent her spare time baking “goodies” for family and friends.  She also hosted several gatherings for birthdays, holidays, and sporting events where she often cheered on her Denver Broncos.

The family appreciates the love and support during this difficult.  time and would like to give a special thank you to her most dearest friend, Arnetta “Dee Dee” Waters.

Sending prayers to the family. My deepest condolences.
Mrs Virginia was a special person who always welcomed my daughter with opened arms into her home. I miss those days on Woolsey St. Her walking every morning and letting all the kids play or spend the night at her house. She made sure everyone on the block who played with Shanya was good.
Great neighbor and amazing person. She definitely loved her family. Shanya and her granny had a special bond that I will always remember. Again sorry for your loss.

Thank you for always listening when me and my mother were on the outs. Thank you for loving me as your bonus daughter. Thank you for all the phone calls you didn’t have to answer.
