On Monday, July 13, 2020, Missionary, Mother Verta Mae Dukes, at the age of 94, received her call to return to the Lord. She left with peace in her heart and a smile on her face. She graciously entered into the presence of the Lord.
Mother Dukes was born on August 26, 1925 in Columbia, North Carolina to the loving parents of Jasper and Lillie Mae Wynn.
She received her education in North Carolina and continued on to become a Licensed Cosmetologist. She was a gifted Artist, Seamstress, Published Poet and Music Teacher. Verta Mae Dukes also served as a devoted Sunday School Teacher, Musician and Choir Director at St. Stephens Church of God In Christ in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Accepting Christ at an early age taught her to live a holy and dedicated life to God. It was because of her walk with Christ that she met and married the love of her life. Joe M. Dukes and Verta Mae made their home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Over the years, she became well known and loved as a good neighbor and Community Leader. She dedicated her life to serving God, loving her husband and caring for her family and friends.
Mother Dukes had a passion for life. She was always encouraging others to love the Lord. Her daily lesson was to excel to the highest level possible, achieve your greatest goals and never, ever stop trusting God. She enjoyed good humor and her infectious smile brought delight to all who knew her.
Mother Verta Mae Dukes was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe M. Dukes and one surrogate daughter, Beulah Y. Brown.

August 4, 2020 at 9:23 pmI thank God for the times I have had opportunity to be in the presence of Mother Dukes. Her spirit offered so much peace and consolation. I will never forget travelling with Mother Dukes and her family to the islands and celebrating her 90th Birthday. Even in times away from the church, the anointing was always present and truly the JOY of THE LORD was evident,

Praying for peace and comfort as you celebrate the wonderful life of Mother Dukes. I remember hearing about all the good times my Mom and Mother Dukes would have when they get together or talk on the phone. These two had a cherished friendship that went back years. She will truly be missed among her family and friends. May God continue to bless and keep you during this time of mourning. …”earth has no sorrow that heaven can not feel”
