Vernon A. Billups, Sr., 92, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully on August 30. Born on January 10, 1930 in Norfolk, Virginia, Vernon was the the 6th of 12 children born to the late Samuel and Katie Billups. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheilah Terry, three of his sisters and six of his brothers.
A 1949 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Vernon spent three years in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Japan, before joining the U.S. Postal Service in 1954,
where he was affectionately nicknamed “Billy”. After more than 30 years of service, he retired in 1985.
Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Arleathia, two daughters, Verna (Anthony) Morning and Bonita (Curtis) Beard; one son, Vernon, Jr.; two grandchildren, Samuel Sheehan and Sydney Beard; one brother, Lawrence (Bonita) Billups; one sister, Melvina Billups; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A great father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend, he will be greatly missed.
