Veeta M. Barnes

Veeta M. Barnes, affectionately known as “V” by Michael, her husband of 34 years, was called home to be with the Lord on September 23, 2020. Veeta was the eldest child of Marjorie Woods and Emanuel Mullen, Sr. Veeta was a lover of the Lord, children, education, and fashion. Veeta knew and loved the Lord and she made it a point to serve Him. Veeta’s Christian acts of service were carried out at First Baptist Church South Hill; where she was a choir member, served on the usher board, Pastor’s Aide member, and Vision Rider Secretary.

A product of the New York private school system and Norfolk Public School system, Veeta soared her way through her educational journey, eventually earning her Bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State College, Master’s Degree from Norfolk State University and later becoming a Doctoral candidate at Nova Southeastern University. Veeta used her knowledge and passion for education, to educate students of the Yorktown school district and later retired from the Chesapeake Public School system at the completion of over 35 years of service.

After being informed that she had Breast Cancer, Veeta came out swinging and fought hard to win her fight against the horrible disease. Unfortunately, the effects of chemotherapy surgery, radiation Veeta was a devoted Mother, dedicated Wife and loving Grandmother to her only child, Genell (40) Husband Michael and Grandchildren Kyle (20), Gavon (15) and Carter (5).

Veeta was preceded in death by her mother, Marjorie Woods Baum; father, Emanuel Mullen, Sr. and Bonus Dad, Wylenza Baum. She leaves behind, her Husband ,Michael Barnes ; Daughter Genell Holloman; Grandchildren Kyle,Gavon and Carter; Siblings Emanuel Mullen JR. (Lucy), Denise Mullen-Doughtie , Carolyn Tinsley ( Moses), Stephanie Fernandez; In-Laws Andrea Myers ,Deidra Barnes; bestfriend and cousin, Cynthia Corbett and a host of other family members and friends.

Family will remember her as a fun loving fashionista, the Matriarch of
the family and a virtuous woman of God.

Veeta and I worked together at Oscar Smith Middle School for Chesapeake and she was a wonderful teacher and friend. I am so sad to hear this news. I hope the Good Lord gives comfort to all those who grieve for her now. She is with her Lord and at peace.
