Sunset: November 5, 2023

Our dearest and beloved Vanessa “Nessa” Onyirimba peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

Vanessa was born in Norfolk, VA on December 3, 1953, to the late Horace C. and Addie Marie Spiers. She was also preceded by one brother, Joseph Spiers, and one sister Theresa Mebane. Vanessa served as a member of Freedom C.O.G.I.C and later joined Bethlehem Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA where she served on the Usher Board Ministry. Vanessa was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She attended Norfolk State University where she studied Business Administration and Management. She completed the Norfolk Police Department Citizen Academy Program. She was previously employed with Norfolk Sentara Health & Rehabilitation Center as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) before starting her own business as a Private Duty Nurse. She was known for her kind heart and desired to make you laugh whenever in her presence. Those who know her would say she was very feisty but caring and loved to have fun. She was a die-hard football fan, who cherished her Pittsburgh Steelers and loved playing weekly B.I.N.G.O. as well as being a member of the South Norfolk VA Moose Lodge 464 Chapter 947.  Vanessa was known as “The Life Of The Party”. She was a dedicated member of the Seniors In Motion line dancing team where dancing was her passion.

Vanessa was known to be the most loving and dearest mother and grandmother. Her undying love was for her four granddaughters DiZiyah Smith, Destiny Smith,  Zolayah Smith, and Zareah Smith, whom she would do anything to put a smile on their faces. Vanessa leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter, LaShawnta “Shadae” Onyirimba-Robinson (Maurice) and one son, Shawn D. Spiers (Carol) four sisters Paulette Coley (Ernest), Bernette James (Billy), Josephine Spiers, and April Long (David). Her lasting memories will also remain in the hearts of a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for every act of kindness and support extended to us during the passing of our loved one. Vanessa was loved and admired by all and will be deeply missed.

You will be missed. I remember when I first met you at BINGO we were sitting at the same table that night. We started a conversation and I was telling you about slots and you asked, me where are that at? I said, right up the street it’s on sparrow Road. I them asked, would you like to follow me up there. We have been hanging out there and other little slot places and bingo ever since then.
