On Monday, January 18, 2021, Tiny Higgs transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home. She was born on April 21, 1924 in Williamsburg (York County), Virginia to the late Elmore and Susie Willis Schofield.
Tiny grew up in both Williamsburg and Newport News, Virginia. She attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Newport News, James City Training School in Williamsburg, and Huntington High School in Newport News. While at Huntington, she played violin in the school orchestra.
At an early age, Tiny started attending church with her mother. When she was twelve years old, she was baptized and became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Newport News. During her lifetime, she continued to serve faithfully in the church and became a member of two other churches – Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Williamsburg and New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia where she continued her membership until her death. At New Mt. Vernon, she was a member of the usher board and the senior choir.
She married Charles H. Jackson on August 11, 1943. To this union, three children; Tiny, Charles, and Ronald were born.
Tiny worked for twenty–two years at the Williamsburg Inn Dining Room. She had a strong work ethic. Anyone who worked with her or for her knows that any work that was done, whatever it was, had to be done the right way or not at all.
Voting in elections was always important to her. She encouraged others to do their civic duty by voting. For many years, she worked as a poll worker.
On March 11, 1976, Tiny married the love of her life, Alphonzo Higgs. Through this marriage, she gained another son, Ernest.
Tiny was loving, caring and always willing to give a helping hand. She was also the heart of her family. She was forever planning meals and family gatherings and seemed to never tire of making family and friends feel welcome and comfortable. Everyone loved these events.
In Portsmouth and the surrounding area, Tiny was known for her delectable lemon cake. Those who were favored with the cakes, continued to ask for them even after she “retired” from baking them.
In July 2019, Tiny moved to Jacksonville, Florida to live with her daughter and son in–law. Soon after, she joined the Mandarin Senior Center where she met her “sunshine” friends. She thoroughly enjoyed and shared many experiences (conversing, playing Bingo, shopping, going to symphonies, going out to lunch, and going to the circus) with them.
She had been involved in a number of organizations. Among them were charter member of Order of the Eastern Star, Pride of Grove, Chapter 181; member of Arabia Court #23, Daughters of Isis; Electa Royal Court #2, Cyrenes of Virginia, and John Barnes Assembly #9, Order of Golden Circle. Tiny was also a member of the Arabia Court #23 bowling team.
Tiny was predeceased by her devoted husband, Alphonzo Higgs; sister, Estelle Beverly; brother, Stanley Schofield, and grandson, Brandon Jackson. Left to cherish her fond memories are her sons, Ronald Jackson (Adrienne), Charles Jackson (Sharon), Ernest Higgs (Lessie); daughter, Tiny Hebron (Clarence), nine grandchildren, seven great–grandchildren, one great great–grandchild, nieces, a nephew, a great–niece, a great–nephew and a host of other family members and friends.

January 28, 2021 at 6:21 pmLet not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God believe also in me. Although my heart is sadden, I am delighted in knowing she is now with your Heavenly father and the love of your life, Alphonso. To the family, may the peace of God continue to be with you today and the days ahead. She lived a long and full life and certainly didn’t let any grass grow under feet. I will miss my “Doll Baby” but will always have her in my heart. ?

February 1, 2021 at 7:47 amTo Tiny, Clarence & family, We send heartfelt condolences to you. May you take comfort in the sweet memories of a beautiful life. Be not weary or saddened by her divine relocation, for her spirit will live with you forever. Thank God for Assured Comfort and Continued Cover. Sending you lots of love.
To Marie & family, I will miss Mrs. Higgs’ beautiful smile and her reassurance that “all is well”. Her phone calls from Florida were a gift! They brightened my day! We served together on the Dorothy Neal-Collins Usher Board at New Mount Vernon for many years. Even though I am sad, I’m honored to remember Mrs. Higgs as one of the most beautiful persons (inside and outside) I’ve ever known. We wish the Jackson, Higgs, and Hebron families peace and comfort. “All is Well”

February 3, 2021 at 9:10 amTiny Higgs began her journey with a basket in her hand. In her basket were seeds to sow. She began looking for a road less traveled, not everyone will find it. Her footprints will vanish from this trail, but the seeds sown will grow and bear fruit. The fragrance from this fruit drew hungry souls to sojourn with her, as we all seek God in Spirit and Truth. Dust from this road tempted her thirst, but it was not just water she thirst for. She drank only from Destiny’s cup. Eternity allowed Tiny Higgs a few moments in time, so she had to be about her Father’s business. Her steps were ordered. Although her feet were prepared, they still grew weary. So she stood on the promises of God for strength. She knew there would be a festive table filled with blessings waiting for her. Divide them among her loved ones–to “Little Tiny” and to the fourth and fifth generation! Along the way, she has eaten of the Bread. She is full. Jesus bids her to rest and extended His hand. She gladly accepted and sits on the porch of the Kingdom to recap her travels and realize that her journey was just as important as her Destination!
To all of family…May God continue to surround you with His Loving and Comforting Arms.
