Timothy Lawrence Coffey

Sunrise: June 1, 1940

Sunset: February 9, 2025

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  – John 3:16

Timothy Lawrence Coffey transitioned peacefully in the comfort of his home in Chesapeake, VA, on February 9, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on June 1, 1940, in Jackson County, Alabama, to his predeceased parents, Illa Mae Horton Coffey and Matthew Coffey. After growing up in Alabama, he joined the U.S. Navy as a proud member to serve his country. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he established a 2nd career in education where he worked for 34 years at Lake Taylor High School (Norfolk Public Schools) as a business education teacher until retirement.  He attended Norfolk State College (Norfolk State University) and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and later attended Old Dominion University and obtained a Master of Business Administration degree.

Tim is survived by his wife Evelyn Coffey, his daughter Tiffany Coffey, his grandson Jace Coffey-Williams, his brother Gus Horton (Bell) of Chattanooga, TN, two brother-in-laws Charles Mitchell and Ronald Ward, and five sister-in-laws Patricia Mitchell, Sharon Mitchell, Donna Carrington, Joyceen Pamp, and Darlene Randle, and a host of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother John Coffey of Tallahassee, FL, and his sister-in-law Valerie Jackson.

Tim also served as a father and a mentor to many.  He also helped to raise two of his nieces as his own into adulthood, Tracey Mitchell and Patrice Mitchell. He was known for his kind spirit and was known to help anyone that had a need. “No” was not in his vocabulary, and he helped so many with pleasure. He played a part in enhancing the lives of so many people, and they would not be who they are today without his kindness and leadership.

Although Tim is no longer with us, his spirit will live in our hearts forever.
