Thelma M. Capps

Sunrise: August 27, 1938

Sunset: March 10, 2019

Our beloved Thelma Louise Capps went home to be with the lord in the morning of Sunday March 10, 2019.  She was the child of the late Albert and Eunice Minnis.  She was born on August 27, 1938 in Newark, New Jersey, and treasured many family members in Princess Anne County.  Louise attended John T. West Elementary, Jaycox Junior High School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School at 16 years of age.  The family and community raised her to learn the value of hard work and higher education.  Louise was fortunate to have a close group of friends who remained close from early age.

Louise gained entrance into Hampton Institute, Hampton, VA where she received her Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry.  She was the first person of color accepted to the School of Pharmacy at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA where she earned her degree and worked in Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania until she retired from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in 1994.  The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority initiated Louise as a member while at Hampton and she was an active member until her illness.

Louise met Thurmond Capps participating in the Bookers’ renowned marching band, of which she was the youngest member.  The two later became soulmates and married.

Louise accepted Christ at an early age and over the years she served Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA; Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, Pittsburgh, PA; and New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA.  She carried out her passion by tutoring many children in different subjects, working on the Finance Committee, leading a Cub Scout troop, teaching Sunday School, and singing in the Choir.  Louise promoted health through different initiatives and organizations regarding diabetes, heart issues, AIDS, and nutrition.  She was a member of and held leadership roles in the Pinochle Bugs, Hampton’s Booster Club, and some other organizations.  Louise was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing cards, and enjoyed entertaining.

Louise leaves to cherish in her memory, her son, Thurmond II with many cousins and friends.
