Tawanza Nyeka Anthony was born on Monday, May 10, 1971 and transitioned from this life on Monday, October 19, 2020. She
graduated from Indian River High School in 1988 and from Florida A & M University in 1993. Tawanza’s quiet strength, illuminating smile and humble heart endeared her to everyone she met. She was a friend to many as she served in the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and as a charter member of the Greater Baltimore Chapter Florida A&M University National Alumni Association But those were not her only areas of service.
She served as a member of New Psalmist AME Church, a long-time volunteer with Baltimore Public Library, reading stories to young elementary aged children from her personal book collections; volunteered with Baltimore Greenspace – a non-profit land trust dedicated to the preservation of urban greenspaces, gardens, forest patches and the promotion of greening projects; and was a former member of the African American Steering Committee for the Walters Art Gallery of Baltimore.
While AKA Sorority & her FAMUly were two of her biggest passions; her other passions included cooking and exploring new and exotic restaurants; participating in formal volunteer nature walks to inform the general public about the importance of maintaining public green space. While she was very socially active, she most enjoyed smaller, intimate gatherings with close friends. Most important, to her life was her relationship with God, especially in her private devotions.
Tawanza was predeceased by her sister, Daisy Anthony. Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Eily and Frances Anthony; sister, Tazamisha Talley (Vernon); partner of 14 years, Jason Sutton; nieces and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

October 25, 2020 at 3:01 pmTawanza was a beautiful person, co-worker and friend.
When I first got hired at Sprint, she was the first person to teach me the ropes and assist whenever I needed help.
I soon learned that we shared a love for shopping and fine dining.
We bonded over many good meals and regular shopping trips to our favorite stores to hunt for bargains. She taught me to be a bit more open minded about trying new things and living in the moment. We shared many laughs as well as sorrows. During the fun times, she would frequently say “look at my face” and then she would make a facial expression to compliment the moment.
I spoke with her the Friday before she passed away and told her how beautiful she looked as she shared a photo of herself taken at her sister’s recent wedding. I could envision her smiling and blushing as she replied “thank you”.
Most would say to pass away at 49yrs old is too soon, but it’s the quality of life we live no matter how short or long and the impact that we leave on others that is the most important. It’s what we do with that little dash between the time we are born and the time we pass away that is most significant.
Tawanza enriched my life and I am honored to have been a part of her life.
To the family, you have my deepest heartfelt condolences.
I pray that you will find comfort in knowing that Tawanza was a bright light that will never dim because she touched many lives and fond memories of her will live on forever.

October 26, 2020 at 9:54 amTawanza and I graduated from Indian River High School together in ’88. Our parents were later neighbors and we laughed at how we never saw each other in VA, but ran into each other at a festival in MD. Tawanza was one of the smart girls at IRHS.:-) I can still see her smile as we talked history & world events in AP History.
I now I learn she’s also my Soror. ? We’re sending prayers for the lovely Anthony family. The Steeles & Morgans are here for you.??
