Sylvia Butts Cummings

Sunrise: March 29, 1953

Sunset: April 8, 2025

Sylvia Butts-Cummings was born March 29, 1953, in Norfolk, VA. She died at 72 years old on April 8, 2025, in Virginia Beach, VA. Ms. Cummings was given six months to live, but through her faithfulness, she survived two years. She was the companion to her late dog Buster (Boo-Boo), the daughter to the late Louise Lee Roland and William Henry Butts, sister to the late Rudolph and Melvin Butts.

Ms. Cummings retired from Ford after 20 years, and she worked at Sam’s Club for over 18 years. She attended Evangelist school at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA, where she received her Evangelist license. She faithfully served on the Faith In Action Usher Ministry and was a faithful member of Place of Change until God called her home.

Ms. Cummings is survived by her sister Theresa Ann Wingard, her daughters Surina Washington (Neil), Trina Thomas of Norfolk, VA and her son Wesley Roman Butts (Zikeya) of Atlanta, Georgia. She leaves behind nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as her childhood friends Brenda Wright, April Laniar, Dorothy R. Smith, and Patricia Potter. She was a devoted colleague and friend to many. She will truly be missed.

We’re saddened by the parting eyes swollen with our tears, but thank you, God, for loving us and easing all our tears. We loved her Heavenly Father, she knew and loved us too, so cherish Father this dear life. She’s coming home to you. In her words, “God got me.”

We, the family, would like to give thanks to everyone who was on this special journey during the time of her fight. Special thanks to Ms. Casey Knapp and Mrs. Minnie.
