Susie A. Grier

Sunrise: December 26, 1947

Sunset: December 25, 2019

Susie Anne Grier was born on December 26, 1947 to the late John and Erma Grier in Norfolk, Virginia. She attended Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1965. Susie accepted Jesus as her savior and received Christian education at St.Thomas AME Zion Church and St. James AME Church both in Norfolk, Virginia.

Susie transitioned to eternal life on December 25, 2019 after suffering a heart attack. She was surrounded by her beloved family who reassured her of their love until the end. The gift of giving was one of her greatest assets and she loved to shop especially with her niece, Teresa. They would regularly shop throughout Tidewater on any given weekend. Owners of local consignment shops knew her lovingly as Aunt Susie. Susie often purchased items for herself and unselfishly gave them away to others. Susie was an avid reader who would walk to the local libraries. Susie was very knowledgeable and when her nieces and nephews were young, she was often called upon to help with school projects and other school assignments. Sewing was another one of

Susie’s favorite hobbies. She even taught her great niece Jasmyn how to use a sewing machine. Susie was the life of every gathering. She loved playing video, board, and trivia games and was almost always the winner.

Susie’s nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews were the loves of her life. “Aunt Sue Sue” as she was affectionately called spent quality time with all of them. She would take them on day trips, city bus rides, carnivals, circuses and parades treating them to an abundance of toys and sweet treats. They learned new and historical facts and experienced many attractions in the Norfolk area. Her time and attention to them will always be remembered.

Seeking to keep her neighborhood a safe and decent place, Susie would advocate through words and letters for community improvement, improved bus services and greater grocery store access. She was employed by the Norfolk Department of Social Services where she helped those in need for over 20 years. On the evening of her sudden death, she thanked

God for retirement and asked her niece Mia to sing a “Thank you Jesus song” to her and her sister.

Susie was predeceased by her parents, John and Erma Grier, her brother Byron Grier, her sister, Erma Staton and her nephew Andre Staton. Left to cherish her memories are her sister Constance Grier Overton, nieces Teresa Staton, Monica Robinson, Mia Smith and Shauna McIntosh, a nephew Ryan Grier, 12 great nieces and nephews, two aunts, Flossie Branchcomb and Ann Walker, two special cousins, Sylvia Anderson and Joan Bennett and a host of relatives and friends.
