Stanley Leroy Lowe

Sunrise: October 13, 1942

Sunset: May 12, 2024

Stanley L. “Leroy” Lowe entered this life on October 13, 1943 as the first born son and eldest of five children born to the late Frederick A. Carter, Sr and Eloise Deloris Lowe. Gently and quietly, God placed him in His loving arms and called him home in the early morning hours on May 12, 2024.

His family and friends always called him by his middle name “Leroy”. He was born and raised in the Lindenwood area of Norfolk; and educated in the Norfolk Public School System where he attended Lindenwood Elementary, Jacox Jr. High and B.T. Washington High Schools.

He learned the craft of plastering and became a Master Plasterer working for Kennedy Plastering, in Norfolk, VA; then later became an Independent Plastering Contactor.

After the passing of his first wife Martha; Leroy met and married his sweetheart, Joyce Williams. After becoming ill, her care was too much for him to manage alone; and her son Tony became her caregiver. Later, Leroy resided with a close family friend, Jean Spruill.

Leroy enjoyed life, being with family- especially during the holidays; and hanging out with his childhood friends from the old neighborhood. He lived his life his way and partying and playing cards was part of living his life, his way.

Three years ago, Leroy suffered a debilitating stroke. He stayed briefly with his sister Mary, but later was placed in a nursing home where he received the much needed and additional care she was not equipped to provide.   On visits to the nursing home, you could always find Leroy doing his favorite things, “eating”; and disturbing him while eating, well, that was a big mistake! You could also find him enjoying his second- best pastime, sleeping; and third- watching westerns, football, and basketball on the TV.  He was a die-hard Red Skins fan. Last October we celebrated with him, a surprise 81st Birthday Party at Beth Sholom Nursing Home, where we showered him with gifts (some included Red Skin paraphernalia), a birthday cake in Red Skin colors; and video calling family members who could not attend, to wish him a happy birthday.  He especially enjoyed visits from his great-great niece Majesty, who would always show him things “she” could do on her iPad; and showed him one of her many Barbie dolls. He also enjoyed the video calls made to family members during visits. They brought him great joy and he would let out one of his many big hee-hee laughs and give them a big smile. Equally enjoyable were visits from his close childhood friends, Mark, Johnny, Anthony and his cousins Patrcia and Ricky.   Whenever Leroy became a bit much for the nurses to manage, they would call his sister Mary. She would pay him a visit or talk to him on the phone to calm him down and would always end by telling him, “I really need for you to get some “Act Right” and do what they ask so you can stay out of the hospital.” He would say, “Ok Frances, I hear you. You got ten dollars?” “For what?” she would ask. His reply,” Hee-hee, that’s my business!”  His funny laugh and big smile will always be remembered and missed so much.

Leroy was predeceased by his youngest brother, Frederick Alexander Carter, Jr (Lil Fred) and oldest sister, Burnette Carter Pepper (Bea).

Remembering him with love and wonderful memories are his wife, Joyce Lowe;  children, Antonio (Tony), Sr. (Patricia) of Richmond, VA;  Veron, Otis  and Eloise (Renee) all of Norfolk, VA; 2 Sisters, St. Mary F. Carter of Virginia Beach, VA and St. Chavelia  C. Tate of Charlotte, NC; 7 grandchildren, Montreal, Deja, Jahlil, Isaiah, Chyna, Caya and Antonio, Jr.; two great-grandchildren; 4 nieces; 4 nephews; 13 great nieces, 8 great nephews; 12 great- great nieces and nephews; a Special Sister-in-Law, Fran Faulk of Suffolk, VA; a Special Cousin Patricia Warren, Norfolk, VA; lifelong friends, Mark, Johnny and Anthony of Norfolk, VA; and a host other relatives and friends.
