Sidney Augustus Hunt, Sr. was born on September 21, 1951, in Portsmouth, Virginia to Pauline (Speller) Hunt and Augustus White. He was raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. He passed away peacefully in Suffolk, Virginia on Monday, December 5, 2022. He was 71 years old.
Sidney grew up in the Douglas Park and later moved to the Prentis Park neighborhood in Portsmouth, VA at 2002 Elm Avenue. He enjoyed and played many sports such as basketball, football and baseball. He attended church regularly and often talked about attending Sunday school and his long walks to Vacation Bible School that he enjoyed. He had many friends and was affectionately known as “Von Zip”, Sidney graduated from Cradock High School in 1970 and was a member of the football and track team. His biggest joy was singing in the Chorus which started his love for music.
After graduating High School, Sidney joined the U.S. Air Force and was a Fire Protection Specialist (Fire Fighter), and had assignments at Frances E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC. Sidney married Virginia Darlene Carter, the love of his life, in 1973. They had four children and were married for 49 years. Following his Honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force, Sidney was employed as a Government Civilian at the Naval Air Terminal at the world’s largest Naval Base in Norfolk, VA as a Work Leader for 40 years. Sidney’s love for family and friends was infectious. He always held gatherings and celebrations and was an Outstanding dancer. His love for music is Legendary, whereas, people would call him from across the United States to ask the name of an artist or song. Sidney has hundreds of album’s, cassette tapes, and cd’s. Some of his favorite artists and groups are: Earth Wind and Fire, Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Marvin Gaye, Al Green and his favorite group was the Delfonics. Sidney also enjoyed learning, he attended Tidewater Community College where he studied Mass Communications and Photography where we still have his original works. He loved reading, watching sports, going to the movies, playing cards, and avid Jeopardy watcher. He was a student of history and archived many magazines, and various other valuables that are collector’s items today.
Sidney became a member of the Masonic Faith Lodge no. 162 in Norfolk, VA in 1996 and loved his brotherhood.
Sidney joined New Mt. Zion Church of God In Christ in 2019 and served as a Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents Augustus White, and mother Pauline (Speller) Hunt.
He was the oldest of nine children.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Virgina D. (Carter) Hunt. One surviving aunt, Betty (Speller) Longshore. Four precious children, Damon Hunt, Sidney A. Hunt Jr., Demetria Hunt, and Sonya Hunt; his sisters, Barbara Hunt, Crystal (Hunt) Cradle, and Joyce (Hunt) Green, Elaine Dickens, Erlaine Dickens; his brothers, William Henry Hunt, Alexander Hunt and Ramel Hunt; his grandchildren, Shonette, Lutrell, Tyreke, Zavion, Shavonne, Justin, Jamal, Jordan, Alexis, Aaliyah, Jada, Rashad Jr.; Three great-grandchildren; King, Aiden, A’kari and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives. A special cousin Debra (Speller) Brown. Sidney did not just have one best friend, but three, Walter Nixon, Ronald Blackwell, and Calvin Freeman, all of whom he loved.
