Shirley Virginia Shivers was born on June 21, 1939 in Norfolk County to the late Mabel and Rufus Harper. She attended the Cornland School, a one-room schoolhouse in Chesapeake. She was employed at Stewart Sandwiches in Norfolk for many years as a Shift Leader. She was also employed at Indian River High School as a cook for many years.
Shirley was a member of Solid Rock Worldwide Outreach Ministries in Chesapeake for many years. She liked playing cards and spending time with family members. Her favorite pastimes were watching Madea movies, soap operas, and attending plays. She loved to crack jokes, cook, eat fried fish, seafood, and home-cooked meals. And she loved having visitors.
Shirley passed away on January 7, 2024. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband Mills Shivers, predeceased by her son, Anthony Eugene Skinner (Alison); and predeceased by her daughter Deborah Ann Nichols. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Robert Lee Skinner, Jr. (Lisa); her daughters, Denise Marie McQuillia and Elizabeth Benjamin, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
