Shirley Marie Horton was born in Kenly, North Carolina on September 1,1945. She was a dedicated Sister, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Great Aunt, Great Great Aunt and Friend to many. Shirley graduated from Booker T. Washington High and Kee’s Business College. An intelligent and savvy business woman, Ms. Horton owned and operated Williams Home for Adults and Atlantic Discount Outlet for several years, before embarking on a career at Norfolk State University where she retired after nearly 30 years of service. She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church under the leadership of Steven Lewis. and she loved her church Family and she loved the Lord.
Shirley was a kind spirit who helped anyone she encountered and never met a stranger. She was warm-hearted, witty and a lil sassy. Well-known as a World Class Cook, she loved to show off her skills and feed her family, friends and even strangers.
Shirley served as the Matriarch of the Horton Family for many years and will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by her parents: James & Adora Horton siblings: James, Melvin, Lenward, Ruth Jesse, Hayward, William McKinley, and Helen.
This kindred spirit leaves to mourn her Baby Sister Eunice, Sons Trent (Paula) & Bryan (Cynthia) Horton: Special “Daughter” Atalaya Horton-Keyes (Donald) and her personal Nurse/Niece Barbara Stevens: Grandchildren Jennifer, Trent Jr., Amber, Tyrando (deceased) Stephon (deceased), Shirlea, Xavier, Trenell Sr. and Bryana: Great Grandchildren Amaiya, Treniya, Tremiere, Trenell Jr., Kennedy, Kameryn, Seyven & Sincere. Special thanks to Linda, who served as a companion and aide for years.
