Sherry Moore

Sherry Moore was born on April 30th, 1930 to the late Celand Myrick and Elijah Moore. Sherry transitioned onto glory to be with his Heavenly Father on January 26th, 2020.

Sherry was a man of purpose. He was propelled into his destiny after 11th grade when he enlisted in the U.S Army. There he was ranked as a sergeant of the motor pool. He was deployed to Europe, stationed in England and Germany, and also fought in the Korean War. While stationed in England, he often traveled to France for vacation. It was there that he saw two beautiful African soldiers from Senegal that impacted his life profoundly. They were regal and walked with a sense of pride that empowered him to gain a newly discovered confidence of his self-image. It was also while he was enlisted in the army that Sherry met the love of his life, Emma Gloria Hinnant, who he affectionately referred to as Gloria.

Returning to the U.S with new vision, he rejoined his wife Gloria and moved to New York. Living temporarily in Manhattan, he was encouraged to own his own home in the North East Bronx. From there, he raised his two children; Janice lone Moore (Cochrane) and Rynard Moore. He was a father that raised his children to honor God, respect others, and love their country. He encouraged education both in and out of school. He provided the means for his children to receive higher education as well as participate in any extra-circular activity that was presented to them.

Sherry worked as a diesel mechanic for a major corporation for many years and then opened his own business, “United Truck Repair”. Anything that had a diesel engine he could work on, he was a master mechanic. Throughout the years, he impressively gained his CDLs and airline pilot’s license. While he finally retired in Virginia, Sherry continued to use his knowledge as a diesel mechanic at another corporation well into his later years. Despite mastering skills and achieving certifications, he still longed to complete his education. In 2012, at the age of 82, Sherry proudly completed his GED, a goal he worked diligently towards for years.

Of all his accomplishments, his greatest reward in life was receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Through this filling , he gained a greater understanding of his purpose in life. More than just earning money, accolades and providing for his family, he was destined to share and encourage others in the Lord throughout his everyday life.

Sherry, a loving husband, father and friend, leaves behind to carry his legacy His wife Gloria, daughter Janice lone Cochrane, son Rynard Sherry Moore , grandchildren Tiffany Martin (Donnie Martin), Daniel Cochrane, Ariel “Amber” Cochrane, and Aaron Cochrane. In addition, he leaves behind his inheritance of great grandchildren that brought him much joy: Tareio, Khalani, Kai and A’maiyah. He will be deeply missed by a host of family, friends, and neighbors.

    The Wednesday morning men’s Bible study at Kempsville Presbyterian Church has been missing the wisdom and participation of Sherry Moore recently. We grieve at his loss to the family, to our group and to the world. Friends like Sherry are hard to find.
