Sunrise: April 13, 1981

Sunset: September 3, 2021

Shedrick and Helen Bessent Byrd were blessed to be the parents of Shedrick Tyrone Byrd who was born April 13, 1981. On Friday, September 3, 2021 the Triune God called Shedrick Tyrone home after forty years of human existence.  During his elementary school years, Shedrick joined Messiah Presbyterian Church and was active in church activities as a young adult.  Early on following two years of preschool at Greenhill Farms Academy and three years of primary school at Norfolk Academy, Shedrick had earned a reputation as an active team player.  He completed grades four through nine at Norfolk Collegiate School and ten through twelve at Ryan Academy of Norfolk where his favorite subjects were mathematics.  He spent a post-graduate term at Hargrave Military Academy.  After a basketball scholarship did not keep him focused at Livingstone College, Shedrick tried several jobs, especially cooking and working in assembly plants.

Throughout his life, Shedrick excelled as an athlete beginning with BMX bicycle racing at three and one-half years old and tee ball.  He continued with little league football and junior golf tournaments.  He also was a ball boy for Norfolk State University varsity boys’ home games.  In ninth grade Shedrick played on the Norfolk Collegiate varsity golf team and on the varsity basketball teams in 1996 and 1997.  During high school he played on Boo Williams AAU Summer basketball teams.  At the Ryan Academy of Norfolk, Shedrick was on the varsity basketball teams where he was a shooting guard and small forward averaging 17 points per game his senior year.  He lettered two years at Norfolk Collegiate and was Mr. Ryan Academy in 1999.

Shedrick enjoyed educational travel experiences to many states across the country as well as to Canada, Puerto Rico and Ghana, West Africa.  Also he was selected to travel as a member of the U.S. People to People Sports Ambassadors Program to the Dominican Republic and participated in the Caribbean Tropical Shoot-out Tournament July 23-31, 2000 for youth teams from throughout the world.

From 2.5 years throughout his life, Shedrick wrestled with vision impairment.  During childhood he had amblyopia and strabismus, required eye patching then surgery. After a detached retina and surgery at 20 years old and the same medical problem with the other eye about 12 years later, he was unable to advance in employment and was deemed visually disabled.  His family enjoyed his good cooking as he showered his children with love and encouragement in their activities.  He had recently enrolled in a program of care and training of dogs and was looking forward to learning how to conduct such a program.

Shedrick created many memories and was widely loved by family and friends. He was the father of Jayden Shedrick Lee Byrd and Jazzmarie Helen Rose Byrd. Other survivors who remember him with much love are his parents Shedrick and Rev. Dr. Helen Bessent Byrd, his sisters Robbin L. Byrd and Doral Jackson (Norman); nieces Sherice Precious Byrd and Margeaux Alexis Byrd; nephew Norman Jackson, Jr.as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

    To the Byrd Family,
I worked at Norfolk Collegiate School and I don’t think it will come as any surprise to his family, especially his parents, that I enjoyed and appreciated Shedrick Tyrone. He had a light within that shone through his beautiful smile. He was caring and kind.
I am so sorry for your loss and for the loss that all those who his life touched will feel.
