Shannon Lenora Wilkerson

Sunrise: January 2, 1972

Sunset: November 17, 2021

Shannon Lenora Wilkerson, 49 of Norfolk, VA was called home to rest on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 while on palliative care in her home from her long hard fight with Breast Cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family during the time of her transition. Shannon was born on January 2, 1972 in Portsmouth, VA. She was the eldest of three children to the late Faye L. Speller.

Shannon was educated in the Portsmouth Public School System. She was a 1990 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. After high school she attended Kee Business College, where she earned her Medical Assisting certification. During her 25 year tenure at Greenbrier Obstetrics and Gynecology, she went back to school at MCI and obtained her LPN certification and was able to move up within the company and became a Nurse Supervisor. She held this position until December 2020, as she was no longer able to work due to her health.

Shannon was a sweet, kind and very humble person. When you saw her, she always had a smile a mile wide on her face. She was a lover of life, nature and most of all her family. If you needed anything, she went out of her way to assist. She would give you the shirt off her back. That’s how much of a giver she was. If you needed a place to stay or a hot meal, she had your back.

When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and arts & crafts. She loved having her daughters, nieces and grandchildren in the kitchen with her, teaching and passing down family traditions as she did with her Mother. She was very artistic and loved to draw and paint as well. She could turn a simple brown paper bag into a masterpiece. Fall was her favorite season. She loved watching the leaves turn colors and fall from the trees. However, the best times were during the holidays spending time with family, cooking and decorating.

Although Shannon loved her family with all her heart, she loved the Lord just as much. She was baptized at an early age. She was very active in her church, working with the Hospitality, Praise Dance and Outreach Ministries and teaching Sunday School. In everything she did in life, she wanted God to get all the glory and be pleased with her works. Even while going through her own trials with her health, she never murmured or complained. She still found time to motivate and encourage others.

Although, we selfishly wanted Shannon to stay here with us a little while longer, God needed her back with Him. She is no longer in pain or suffering and free from the cares of this world. We take great pride in knowing we will see our beautiful Angel again. Take your rest Mom. Well done thy good and faithful servant.

Shannon is predeceased in death by her Mother Faye L. Speller and Grandparents Cleveland and Eunice Newsome. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Ashley Newsome of Norfolk, VA, and Courtney Clark (Jeremy) of Norfolk, VA, Brother, Orlando Newsome (Desireé) of Norfolk, VA, Sisters Natalie Newsome of Norfolk, VA and Sharmona Young (Calvin) of Detroit, MI, 3 grandchildren Jalil Wilkerson, Amara Clark and Kaylie Clark. Niece’s Amina and Samiyah Lewis, Nephew’s Taj and Jaheem Newsome and a host of relatives and friends.

Shannon, I know some days I made you laugh other days I probably got on your nerves, but no matter what you would always have a bright smile waiting for me when I worked at Greenbrier OBGYN. I was always amazed on how you kept going and being there for others even though you were going through your own fight, you are truly an Angel, an will be missed so much.
