Sallie M. Stewart

Sunrise: August 31, 1940

Sunset: December 22, 2021

Sallie Stewart fell asleep in death on Wednesday, December 22, 2021. Sallie was born on August 31,1940 to Frazier William Austin and Molly Mosley Austin in Scottsville, Virginia. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband Stanley Stewart; siblings Rosa Abbott, Dorothy Washington, Mary Wood, William Austin; daughters, Henrietta Chapman, and Jeannette Chapman.

She is survived by her siblings, Christine Solomon, and Roger Austin; daughters, Janice Chapman Smith (William) and Monica Chapman; special daughters, Percilla Yates, and Linda Mitchell (Michael); grandchildren, Ashley Chapman, Maria Chapman, Demetrick Chapman, and Jamar Chapman; great-grandchildren, Mayanna and Khalil.

Sallie took great pride in working hard to make sure that her four daughters would have a secure future; often working 2 jobs.  She earned an Associate of Arts degree from Piedmont Virginia Community College. She worked as a Daycare Administrator and a CNA. She was an Administrative Assistant at the University of Virginia Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The love that she had for children moved her to accept a job reading books to children in the hospital. In later years, she shared her fashion flare with others while working at Peebles Department Store, where she often won awards for her outstanding customer service and sales.

Overhearing Linda talking about Jehovah at work proved to be lifechanging for Sallie. She started attending meetings at the Kingdom Hall and Dianne Baskfield studied the Bible with her. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on November 16, 1991. Sallie was zealous for the ministry and dedicated her life to helping others to learn about Jehovah as a pioneer for many years. She loved the women that she taught the Bible to, and they became like daughters to her. Her first pioneer partner was Kim Cassell. She would often say that Kim helped her to improve her skills in the ministry. She moved to Norfolk, Virginia when she married Stanley Stewart in May 1999. Sandra Turner was her faithful pioneer partner for many years in Norfolk.

Sallie, affectionately called “Sunshine” knew how to have a good time. She was grounded and felt comfortable being in the spotlight. She loved posing for pictures, traveling and was a fun road trip companion. She had recently designated Tuesdays as road trip day with Percilla. Friends have enjoyed singing karaoke with her, playing cards, and having Family Worship. She was known for teasing and joking around; she could dish it out and she could take it.

Sallie was extremely generous and supportive of others. Not only would she share her time, energy, and money, but she would also give you the shirt off her back, the earrings out of her ears, the necklace from her neck or the purse from her shoulder.

Our mouths will water when we think of Sallie’s delicious Kentucky cornbread and amazing chocolate cake, which has been described as “death by chocolate.”   One of Sallie’s favorite songs is a reminder that the time when we will see her again is “Just Around The Corner.”
