Sallie M. Mercer Chesapeake – On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, God called Sallie M. Mercer home. Sallie was born on July 23, 1941, to the late Horace Cuffee and Aramenta Smith Cuffee in Norfolk County VA. Sallie was predeceased by her parents Horace and Aramenta Smith Cuffee, brothers Howard K. Cuffee, and Lemuel Cuffee (Little Bra), sister Armentia B. Cuffee, and son Martin Luther Mercer. Sallie leaves to cherish in her memory her husband Bruce Mercer Jr. of 65 years, son Bruce Mercer III, daughters Myrna Taylor, and Margo Wilson (McClinton), 10 grandchildren Shawna Mercer, Ashley Satterthwaite, Tiffany W. Vander Meulen (Dj), Tierra Mercer, Wayne Taylor, Khristian Taylor (Angel), Andrea Adams (Jonah), Deonte Mercer, Christal Porter (Antonio), and Matthew Lee. Sallie had 6 great grandchildren Jalen Mercer, Logan Satterthwaite, Catherine Satterthwaite, Lyra Vander Meulen, Jacion Mercer, and Porter Bachman, one sister Hilda Henson (Charles), and a special niece Cynthia Cuffee, 4 brother- in-law’s Lewis Mercer, Robert Mercer (Jackie), Arthur Mercer, Albert Mercer (Theresa), 3 sister- in-law’s Esther Green, Alverta Cuffee, and Ida Mae Mercer, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends she cherished.

Sallie was a member of Gabriel’s Chapel A.M.E Zion Church and was the secretary of the Junior Church and Sunday School for 64 years. She received Jesus as Lord and Savior of her life. Also, Sallie was a 1960 graduate of Crestwood High School. She loved family history and was the director of the Cuffeetown Historical Project and enjoyed working with Dr. E. Curtis Alexander. She coedited “Cuffeetown in Service to America” and was proud of “Afro Virginian Veterans” and “Soldiers and Sailors from 1863-2002.” She will be missed by all who loved her.
