Roosevelt Nelson

Mr. Roosevelt “Jill” Nelson, son of the late Mr. Johnnie C. and Mrs. Millie Nelson, was born January 3, 1934 in Craven County, North Carolina. He had made his home in Portsmouth, Virginia for the past sixty-one years. Mr. Nelson was joined in holy matrimony to Mrs. Ruby Mae Forbes Nelson on April 25, 1953 and to this union four children were born. They had been united in marriage for sixty-seven years. Mr. Nelson departed this life on August 19, 2020 at home with his family. He accepted
Christ as his Savior in his latter years.

During his younger years, he was a school bus driver for Craven County Public Schools and he also served in the United States Army for two years receiving many awards. Mr. Nelson retired as a Supervisor Technician of the Norfolk Naval Supply Center from February, 1960 to May, 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Johnnie and Millie Nelson, step-mother, Mrs. Alberta B. Nelson; five brothers, Mr. Robert Edwards Nelson, Mr. Ronnie Lee Nelson, Mr. Joseph Lee Nelson, Mr. Johnnie Ray Nelson, Mr. Lee Cox and two sisters, Ms. Loretta N. Chapman and Ms. Joan E. Mewborn. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Mae Nelson; one son, Mr. Shelton Nelson (Vera) of Newport News, VA; three daughters. Ms. Janice Nelson, Mrs. Sheila Boomer (Charles) both
of Portsmouth, VA and Mrs. Theresa Jones (Vernon) of Chesapeake, VA; five sisters, Ms. Christine N. Arthur, Mrs. Annie Bell Rosenboro (Benjamin), Mrs. Janice N. Gardner, Mrs. Shirley N. Mitchell, Mrs. Susan N. Barrow (Thomas) all of North Carolina; six grandsons, twelve great grandchildren, three great great grandsons; a host of other relatives and friends.
