Roosevelt James Jr.

Sunrise: June 1, 1957

Sunset: January 14, 2022

“And God Shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain” Rev 21:4

On January 14th, 2022, at 6:43 pm, the Lord open his arms to welcome his child Roosevelt (Whistle) James Jr to a new heavenly home of love, peace, joy, and no suffering. He called to eternal rest his loving and caring Son, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Nephew, and Friend. Born June 1, 1957, to the late Roosevelt James Sr and Dorothy James in South Norfolk (Berkley), VA.

He was the third born of eleven children, and the oldest of five boys. He was given the nickname Whistle, because our neighbor used to hum songs and whistle as she sat on her porch to shelled beans. He kept trying to copy her till he got it. Among the nicknames for him, Whistle and Speedy, are just a few longtime favorites of both family and friends. He attended Robert Gatewood Elm School, Chesterfield Heights Elm School, and Lake Taylor Jr High School of Norfolk Public Schools. He studied and obtained his GED in the 80’s. He was employed with various companies to include jobs as a laborer with Suburban Asphalt, Labor Ready, Nor-Ship Co, Blue Channel Crab Co., dishwasher/prep cook for various downtown Norfolk restaurants, and recently was a Salvation Army Holiday Bell Ringer.

He spent life enjoying and living it to the fullest no matter what path he took. Through it all, He found solace in his walk with God, He loved reading his bible (knew his scriptures), and music. His love for caring, sharing, and helping others kept him connected in spending time and sharing whatever he had with family, friends, and strangers. He really enjoyed spending time at family parties, dinners, get-togethers, fishing, and crabbing, He loved eating good meals, especially fried and steam crabs, living near the beach, and watching football (Miami Dolphins Fan).

He is predeceased by our parents (Roosevelt Sr and Dorothy James), siblings: Lynn and William James, Aunts: Pearlie Miller and Gracie Lewis. Whistle leaves to cherish his loving memory, Son Roosevelt Green of Norfolk, VA, Daughter: Keyocia Velasqez (Brian) of Suffolk, VA, Robert Newman of Oregon, and Antonio Newman, of North Carolina, Nine Grandchildren ( Aniyah, Tyjhon, Jaziya, Roosevelt, Ronyelle, Rashiyah, Brian, Arianna, and Briyona), Siblings: Patricia James of Norfolk, VA, Dinah Bell (Brian) of Winston-Salem, NC, Vickie Hobbs (Michael) of Norfolk, VA, Darlisa James of Virginia Beach, VA, Joyce Riddick, Larry James , Jerry James (Elaine), Chris James, Joseph James all of Chesapeake, VA, and special thanks to nephew Jason Hobbs, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

“I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories .The bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.”My sincere.condolences goes to everyone of you.He may be Gone but the Memoirs are everlasting…
