Roosevelt Hicks

Sunrise: September 6, 1930

Sunset: October 12, 2019

Our beloved one, Roosevelt Theodore Hicks, 89 ,departed this mortal life and journeyed to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 12,2019,surrounded by his loving family. Roosevelt , affectionally known as “Roo: was born on September 6,1930, in Norfolk County, Virginia. Those of us who loved him are comforted in the fact that he made his profession of faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, as his personal Savior, many years ago.

Roosevelt was a plasterer by trade and was highly regarded and praised  for his exemplary execution and skill at the worksites of numerous building developments and housing areas throughout the Tidewater area. His work ethic, acute skill, and spirit of true entrepreneurship in his chosen vocation leaves an enduring legacy for other, especially for his sons and various male members of his family, whom he patiently and competently taught and mentored , passing on to them his personal excellence and acumen as an accomplished  and in demand plasterer. Everyone recognized the fact that  “ Roo was The BOSS!”

Roosevelt, who was a diehard fan of the Washington Redskins, also enjoyed a good game of dominoes, talk trash, and , oh , how we will miss his magnificently delicious collard greens at our family reunions that prepared every Christmas for the last thirty-five years.

Roosevelt was predeceased by his parents, John and Maggie Spellman Hicks; brothers, Melvin, Emmanuel, James, John and Samuel Hicks ;sisters Elizabeth Hicks, Mildred Jones, and Marlan Hicks.

His memory will linger and be cherished in the hearts of his wife of sixty-four years, Shirley Barbara West Hicks; his eight children; Cleo Edwards (Pete),Ricardo Hicks, Sabrina Jemmott (Ben), Pamela Drew, Darlene Jones, Patricia Brown (Michael), Kevin Hicks (Nell), Reginald Hicks (Angela); thirty-one grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Jane Ford, Yvonne Hicks, Eunice Hicks; one brother, Marvin Hicks; and numerous cousins ,nephews, nieces, and friends.

We are comforted by the fact that our Roosevelt was a true survivor whose ever positive attitude, despite his illness and setbacks, remained determined and miraculously steadfast to overcome his many physical challenges. We remain inspired by his strength and love for his family; he will be greatly missed.

Just got the news on Thursday morning. My condolences to Shirley and the kids. Roosevelt was a great man. He was straight forward and to the point. He was a wonderful husband and father. He was a business partner to my dad, Fred Brown. He was definitely one of the people that made Tidewater VA a great place to live. He will definitely be missed in the Tidewater plastering scene.
