Roberta Elizabeth Cartwright Wilson was born on January 24, 1953, in Norfolk, VA, to Mrs. Sarah Fentress, the second of five children; however, she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Mr. Harry and Mrs. Bertha Cartwright, in the Berkley Community of Norfolk. Roberta was a product of Norfolk Public Schools.
From an early age, Roberta was a lover of music, especially the gospel music of the church and of the magnificent gospel singing ensembles that sang throughout the city and the churches of that time. Roberta expanded her musical knowledge and appreciation of music and singing by participating in the choruses throughout her school days and by singing in the church choir.
Early on, Roberta became a member of the Oakwood Church of God In Christ, where she accepted Christ as a youth. She also honed her singing skills by singing at church functions and services. The music of the church, to the end of her mortal life, was the ministry that she felt called to serve.
Vocationally, Roberta worked in food services, where she received numerous citations and honors for her dedicated efforts in this field of work. In 2019, she was awarded The Student Success Champion Award from her employer, Old Dominion University, where this award was based on the overwhelming vote of the university students whom she served and whom she supported in many ways beyond her position as a food service personnel. The love and appreciation between the students and Roberta were mutual and reciprocated.
Roberta was a member of New Galilee Baptist Church, Chesapeake, where she served in the choir and other ministries of the church. She loved her Pastor, First Lady, church officers, members, and the many friends who enriched her Christian life.
Roberta was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Eugene and Paul Cartwright, and one sister, Velma Cartwright. She is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Bernard of Chesapeake, VA; one sister, Margaret Cartwright of Norfolk, VA, one sister/cousin, Joyce Myers (Ronald) of Norfolk, VA, one niece, Crystal Cartwright of Upper Marlboro, MD; one nephew, Eugene Spence (Sophia) of Norfolk, Va; one great-niece, Melia Jonas of Upper Marlboro, MD; two stepdaughters, Chantelle of Virginia Beach, VA and Tameka of Chesapeake, VA; two stepsons, Lavon (Cheri) of Camden, North Carolina and Jeremy of Virginia Beach, Va; one godson, Ronald J.T Myers II (Shambri) of Chesapeake, Va, one goddaughter, Shanea Gilchrist, nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Lawrence of Chesapeake, VA and Linda Williams of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother-in-law, Michael Wilson of Manteo, North Carolina, and a host of cousins and friends.
Throughout her life, Roberta remained a Christian lady, a loyal, compassionate, true friend, and a caring supporter of all. To God be the Glory.

October 25, 2024 at 11:38 amThe psalmist said it best ” Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5
The loss of someone you love is difficult. However, when you know that your loved one is IN CHRIST, you understand that transition from this earth means present with THE LORD.
When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be…
