On January 16, 2020 our Heavenly Father in His divine wisdom reached down and summoned Robert into His garden.
Robert Mann Augusta Long was born on July 8, 1941 in the James City Community of New Bern, North Carolina to the late Isaac Long Sr. and Mary “Bea” Long.
Bobby, as he was lovingly called, accepted Jesus as his Savior at an early age. He was baptized in the Neuse River, which was located across the street from his home.
Bobby completed his early education at the James City Elementary and J.T. Barber High Schools. After graduation, he relocated to New York City. In 1974, Bobby continued his education at the New York City Community College, where he obtained an Associates’ Degree in Applied Science.
Bobby’s employment began at the American Almond Product Company, where he met the love of his life, Concepion (Connie) Britton. He worked on that job from 1958-1966, at which time he was drafted in the United States Army and received an Honorable Discharge in 1968. After his discharge from the Army, he became a proud member of the United States Army Reserve. His last employment in New York ended with the Ne York Transit Authority, and he retired from the Transit in 1991 as a supervisor. He also found time to work with his brother, Joe at Birdel’s Record Shop in Brooklyn. Bobby had a strong business mind and he and his brother Isaac decided that they would open up another Birdel’s shop. That business did not last too long.
After retirement in 1991, Bobby and his wife, Connie, along with daughter, Deidre, took a gigantic “leap of faith” and moved from the “Big Apple” to the Tidewater Area in Chesapeake, Virginia. In Chesapeake, he began another chapter in his life. He became a member of The Historic Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia. Bobby was ordained as a Deacon on July 14, 2004. Bobby and his sidekick, Dottie, supervised the Culinary Ministry and the Ministry flourished under their leadership. He still found time to help out a friend, Ernest Borges (Ernie) by working at Broadway Records in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was a member of the New York Exchange and was involved in various activities.
What more can we say about Bobby? He loved his Lord and Savior, his loving and devoted wife and family immensely. He also loved his church, where he was one of God’s devoted and humble servants. Bobby was an avid listener to anyone who came to him for advice and he never passed judgement of whatever the information that they shared with him. In friendship, he was there for his friends and especially the J.T. Barber class of 1958 classmates. He was very proud to be a member of that close-knit class and attended all class reunions.
Robert Long, husband, father, grandfather and brother leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Concepcion Long; son, Kevin McCreary (Gerald); daughter, Deidre Long-Benson (Cory); granddaughter, Aliyah Benson; three sisters, Chelsie Christine Forbes (Edward, Sr.), Shirley Hatton and Marva Long; two brothers, Hardy B. Long and Isaac Long (Deborah); three sisters-in-law, Candy Woods, Delia Perry and Carona Britton; two brothers-in-law, Ricardo and Eric Britton. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will continue to celebrate the life he lived.

February 5, 2020 at 2:19 pmI’m just learning of the passing of Deacon Long (February 5, 2020). My heart is saddened at the loss of such a nice man. Deacon Long was always, always pleasant, with a smile that could light up a room. Though I only interacted with him when we were at church, he was always positive and encouraging. My condolences to his family. Heaven is truly a better place for his being there.
