On Thursday, January 16, 2025, our beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle took his final rest. He was born to Annie Thompson (Mack) on July 19, 1928. He had 1 sister, Quista Dawn Mack Mitchell (Alton).
Robert received elementary education through the 6th grade in Wilson, North Carolina. Robert worked at Norfolk Southern Railroad and International Longshoremen Association (ILA). He retired from ILA in 1993.
Robert was a member of First Baptist Logan Park for over 50 years. Robert served as Trustee for 13 years until July 2022, when he was recognized as Emeritus.
Robert had a very close bond with his beloved son, the late, Robert “Tank” Thompson. He also loved his girls, affectionately known as “The Girls”, Naomi and Michelle. Robert loved to dress. He had matching shoes, hats and suits for every day. According to him, those were his “work clothes”. Wherever he went, he was in charge and always was the first to arrive.
Robert is preceded in death by his loving Mother, whom he affectionately called “Mother”, Annie Thompson (Mack); his beloved son, Robert Lee “Tank” Thompson, Jr.; and his wife, Carrie Mae Thompson. Robert leaves to cherish his memory his 2 loving and supportive Daughters, Naomi Bowe and Michelle Nelson (Elvis) of Norfolk; 1 sister, Quista Mack Mitchell (Alton) of Knightdale, NC; 5 step-sons, Steve Elliott (Maggie) of Norfolk, William Elliott (Janine) of Jacksonville, NC; George Lassiter (Candy) of Chesapeake, David and Michael Lassiter of Virginia Beach; daughter-in-law, Veronica Thompson and brother/cousin, John Dew, both of Norfolk. He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
