Robert Lee Blackwell, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated member of his community, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on March 29, 1931, in Liberty, NC, in Randolph County, he was the son of the late William Lee Blackwell and Olivia Blackwell.
Robert was educated in Norfolk Public Schools. On October 4, 1950, he married Evelyn Virginia Peterson in Norfolk, VA, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership that spanned over seven decades.
He spent his professional career working for Norfolk Mattress Factory, Kitchentown, and finally retired from Central Wholesale. His dedication to his work was only surpassed by his devotion to his family and faith.
A dedicated member of Union United Church of Christ for over 60 years, Robert served as a Deacon, a member of the Male Chorus, taught Sunday School, and was a faithful attendee of Bible Study until recent years. His commitment to his faith and community left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Robert’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of many. He is preceded in death by his father, William Blackwell, mother, Olivia Blackwell, two sisters, Mary McNeely, and Ida Mae Benson, and three brothers, James Blackwell, Eugene Blackwell, and George Blackwell.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn; his children, Robert L. Blackwell, Jr., and Uwandolyn Herring (Larry); eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Rosa Lee Clemmons, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Robert Blackwell’s life was a testament to love, faith, and service. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all.
