With hearts full of love and sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Rizal Fernandez Manaois, affectionately known as “Papa,” a beloved husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, dedicated U.S. Navy veteran, and faithful servant of God, on April 26, 2025.
Born in Santa Lucia, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, Rizal lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, love, and quiet strength. At the age of 20, he joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 23 years of honorable service as a Culinary Specialist, doing what he loved most — cooking, serving others, and traveling the world. His time in the Navy took him across oceans and continents, and he cherished those years, especially the moments he could share with his wife and children. After retiring from military service, he continued to do what he loved, cooking at Denny’s & McDonald’s — not just preparing meals, but building friendships and bringing joy wherever he went.
In his younger years, Rizal spent his days in the rice fields planting cassava with his brother Alex or fishing by the beach — moments that grounded him in simplicity and humility. He carried that same spirit through life.
Rizal loved music, especially ABBA, whose song Super Trouper felt like a reflection of his life, resilient, shining through tough times with strength and joy. He often asked “Alexka” (his sweet mispronunciation of Alexa) to play their songs. He was happiest surrounded by the things he loved: game shows like The Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy, crossword puzzles from the Virginian-Pilot, and cheering for his team, the Washington Commanders.
Above all, Rizal loved God and his family. He attended church faithfully every Thursday and Sunday, no matter what. He was a godly man with a generous heart, always putting others first, rarely complaining, never wanting anyone to worry about him. One of his favorite things to say was, “Asikasom su laman mo.” “Take care of yourself”- Always caring for others. And he meant it deeply. Rizal was the rock of his family. He gave without hesitation, There was never a moment of doubt. His love was whole, unwavering, and unconditional.
Together with Virginia, he helped form the Pangasinan Association at the Philippine Cultural Center, creating a community for other Filipinos in Hampton Roads to find family and fellowship. Rizal also loved helping friends, especially when he could drive them around. Whether it was a coworker or a churchmate. He simply loved to help. Rizal was a man of quiet strength and deep love. Among his many joys in life, he cherished the companionship of his beloved cat, Angel. He also had a warm spot in his heart for dogs, whose loyal nature matched his own. His kindness extended to all creatures, and the love he showed them reflected the gentleness of his spirit.
Rizal is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Virginia Barrozo Manaois, and their children, from eldest to youngest, Raymund Dean Manaois, married to Christine Manaois; Veronica Gubatan, MD, married to Richard Gubatan, with their son RJ Gubatan; Maria Theresa Liquete, MD, with her daughter Marese Austin; Dominic Anthony Manaois, with his children, Dreizelle Amigable and Darren Amigable; and Rizalle Carmel Manaois, with her daughter Richael Adela Manaois. He was the cherished son of Isabelo Caramat Manaois and Candida Fernandez Manaois, and joins his beloved siblings in eternal rest: Lilia Queyquep, Cezar Manaois, and Alex Manaois.
To say Rizal will be missed is an understatement. His family & friends feel so incredibly lucky to have had him — to have been guided by his gentle heart, warmed by his food, inspired by his kindness, and comforted by his endless love. He leaves behind a legacy that will echo for generations — one of laughter, quiet sacrifice, humble strength, and unshakable faith.
We lost a great man.
But heaven gained a Super Trouper.

May 3, 2025 at 1:28 amMy dearest Uncle Rizal, though our paths never physically crossed, my heart aches with a sense of loss for a connection I never had the chance to make. Knowing you were my father Boots’ beloved brother fills me with a bittersweet feeling. I find myself wishing for a different reality, one where I could have known your voice, your smile and the stories you held. While I may have felt unseen by the wider family, please know that you are not unseen by me. Your memory, carried in the heart of your brother, my father, lives on in our family. It brings me such comfort to know that you cherished and kept a picture my father Boots, sent complete with his own handwriting. It feels like a precious link to a part of my father that I might not have otherwise known. Thank you Uncle for keeping that memory alive. It means more to me than words can say. I hold onto the hope that in some way, someday, our spirits will connect. Until then, rest peacefully, dear Uncle. You are remembered. And please, Uncle, tell Auntie Lily that I miss her dearly. I’ll always remember how she never forgot her lovely niece from Boots. Please guide us here from above. And thank you to your lovely daughter Rizalle for reaching out to me. It means the world.
