Rhonda Jean Sumner

Rhonda Jean Sumner 72, of Virginia Beach, VA departed this earth on April 22, 2022 surrounded by family and friends. Rhonda was born in Rural Hall, North Carolina to the late John S. and Margaret (Miller) Johnson. Rhonda graduated from Crestwood High School in 1969 and married the late Lonnie Benard Sumner, Sr. of which five children were born from this union: Dominique,  Steven, Lonnie Jr., Margaux and George.

During her tenure as a military wife, Rhonda served as an Ombudsman and ran her own cleaning business while raising her children. After moving back to Virginia, she furthered her education by completing a Certified Nursing Assistant Certification from Tidewater Tech  in 1994. She also became an ordained minister under the leadership of Apostle Adrienne Lee and served from 1994-1998. Before retiring, Rhonda worked as a manager for Smith & Welton department store.

Rhonda had an authentic love for God. She was a long time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, VA where she served as ministerial staff and was currently a member of Baylake United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, VA.  She loved to read her bible, praying for and with others and spending time with her family and friends. She was a loving, caring person always wearing a smile on her face and always thinking of others first. “To know her was to love her”.

Rhonda is preceded in death by her parents, her son George Sumner (2021) and her brother John R. Johnson (2008). She is survived by her children: Dominique Sumner, Steven Douglas Sumner (Duyen Do), Lonnie Benard Sumner Jr. (Oahn Le) and  Margaux Monique Mcneil; Grandchildren: Mariah Mcneil. Lalea Mcneil, Abrianna Sumner, Jacob Sumner, Anthony Sumner, Erica Sumner, Kim Bach, Thao Nguyen, Tan Nguyen, one great grandson Cairo Mcneil, one and only sister, Angelia J. Copeland (Anthony), sister in law Jean J. Johnson, special friends Charlotte McCullough and Angela Taylor, a host of relatives and friends and faithful fur companion ~ Mittens.
