Sunset: May 27, 2025

Rhett, a devout Christian, beloved father, and dedicated professional, passed away on May 27th after a courageous battle with bladder cancer. He is survived by his loving son, Rhett C. Butler, Jr., and his wife, Cheryl L. Butler, as well as his devoted siblings, Chery L. Mack and Rev. Willie T. Butler, along with their families.

Rhett was a highly respected member of the City of Chesapeake Revenue Operations Team since February 16, 1998. His unique warmth and dedication were evident in every task he undertook, making a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community. Rhett was an incredible person who embodied strength, perseverance, and warmth. Even as he faced health challenges, Rhett continued to work diligently and passionately, always showing up for the team he loved. His positive attitude, determination, and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, Rhett was an avid fan of the Jets and Mets teams, proudly sharing his passion for sports with everyone he met. His love for airplanes and jets was reflected in the photos he kept as wallpaper on his desktop, always a reminder of his adventurous spirit. One of his favorite pastimes in recent years was flying first class, whether it was for a quick weekend trip to Washington, DC, a nice vacation in Florida, or to catch a Mets baseball game out of state.

Rhett’s unwavering faith in God was the cornerstone of his life. He deeply loved and trusted in the Lord, finding strength and comfort in his beliefs. Rhett’s prayers brought solace to many, and his faith guided his every action, making him a beacon of hope and kindness to those around him.

Rhett’s legacy of kindness, strength, and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him. He worked tirelessly until the very end, always putting others before himself and finding meaningful ways to help those in need. Let us celebrate his life and find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with the Lord… now finding blissful joy, peace, and comfort without pain or affliction of any kind.  And, for this we give thanks knowing, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!” (2 Corinthians 5:8-9).
