Regina L. Henderson

Sunrise: May 21, 1944

Sunset: January 18, 2025

Regina L. “Jeanie” Henderson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her church community, peacefully passed away on January 18, 2025, at 80. She was born on May 21, 1944, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Sadie L. Barnes and was raised by her mother alongside her grandmother, Olla B. Barnes, both of whom predeceased her. Regina’s strong foundation of love, faith, and family was shaped by the influence of her mother and grandmother, who instilled in her the values that would guide her throughout her life. Those who knew Jeanie will remember her for her kindness, unwavering faith, and dedication to her loved ones, which impacted everyone she encountered.

Jeanie was married to James A. Henderson, the love of her life, for 55 years, a marriage filled with love, mutual respect, and unwavering devotion. Their partnership was the cornerstone of their family, and through their union, they raised two children, Angela and Terricko, who were the pride of their lives. Jeanie’s unwavering commitment to her loved ones was a testament to the love and devotion that defined her life.

A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Jeanie became known for her beauty, grace, and strength and was crowned Miss Washingtonian in 1962. She went on to attend Winston-Salem State University. She later retired from SunTrust Bank, choosing to spend her retirement years caring for her grandchildren, a role that brought her immense joy.

Jeanie committed her life to Christ early and was baptized at First Baptist Church Bolling Brook, where she remained a lifelong member. Her dedication to her faith was evident in her service as an organist, trustee, and choir member at the church. She also enjoyed taking bus trips with her friends and church family, creating lasting memories.

Jeanie loved vacationing and cruising with her family and classmates, embracing the joy of traveling and creating new experiences with those she loved.

Regina is survived by her loving children, Angela (David) and Terricko (Kristen); her cherished grandchildren, Jasmine, Taylor, Tori, Cameron, Jaden, Christian, and Trinity; and her great-grandchildren, CJ and Cairo. She also leaves behind many extended family, friends, and church members who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Her Rich Avenue family will greatly miss her as well.

Those who were close to Jeanie will miss her one-of-a-kind humorous attitude. No one could laugh and say, “Shut up” simultaneously as she could.

Rest in peace, Regina. Your light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who love you.

Angela, Rick, and family in life we suffer many losses, there are friends who are like family. That’s the way it was with Regina, Che-Che and me. As children every school morning, she would eat breakfast with us. Even though her mother had prepared a hearty meal for her. It didn’t end there, because every Sunday we enjoyed the evening of eating what ever dessert our grandmothers made. Fast forward to working together in NPS. Every morning for 2 years the 3 of us rode together to and from work. Imagine, if you can the 3 of us working together in the same school. Time and distance separated us but not the friendship. An old hymn of the church says, God be with you till we meet again; loving counsels guide, uphold you, may the Shepherd’s care enfold you; God be with you til we meet again.

My heartfelt condolence to the family of the dearly departed, Regina Barnes Henderson. We were classmates during our formative years. We reunited in 1976 on Treasure Island in San Francisco,Ca. We were able to bond and formed a long time relationship. Regina will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her. The Bible teaches these words,” I am the Resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

I know your grief must seem insurmountable. Please know that I am thinking of you and praying for your family that God gives you the needed comfort during this time. Regina and I were in Miss Wyatt’s six grade class at Titustown Elementary, as I look at our class picture where your mom is seated on the front row my mind takes a leap of the past. But more recently I recall when the Titustown Reunion Committee sponsored a bus trip and she was my seat mate. For that moment we were like two chatty little girls talking about our children and our travels.
