Ramona Lois Key was born on December 7th, 1953, in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Gussie and James Warren Key, Sr. She was predeceased by her daughter, Natasha Key and stepfather William Hunter. Ramona will be sorely missed and survived by her brothers and sisters, Linda Bell, Delphine White (Carl), James Key Jr., Belefonte Key, Michelle Parker (Robert Sr.), Douglas Key, Angela Bennett, and Thomas Hunter. Ramona leaves her cherished granddaughter, Danika Key (Jason), and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ramona was educated in the Portsmouth public school system and was a member of the I.C. Norcom High School class of 1973, notably known as “The Class That Never Was” (a class heavily impacted by integration). Then in 2019, 46 years later, Ramona participated in the full graduation ceremony and received her honorary diploma from I.C. Norcom High School.
Ramona was a devoted member of St. Carmel Baptist Church, and loved to be in attendance wearing a fabulous and fashionable hat. Ramona heart was just as big as her personality, and she took pride in helping others. Therefore, it was no surprise when she became a certified nurse’s assistant. Ramona was exceptionally talented, and her level of creativity was unmatched. Ramona was a natural green thumb, and this was expressed through her numerous plants and a garden that she was very proud of.
Ramona was known for her lively and fun-loving personality and lived life on her terms. Her presence was known, and she enjoyed life each and every day. If there was a dance floor, Ramona was on it, her love of dancing, specifically hand-dancing would keep her on the dance floor all night long. Ramona loved spending time with friends and family with a top-shelf Bloody Mary (double shot) in hand.
During her short battle with cancer, she was surrounded by friends and family. Her love of life will not come to an end with her death, we will continue to honor her legacy by living life to the fullest. All whom loved her dearly will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent) and undying love and caring for others.
Please don’t cry because I’m gone; instead, be happy that I was here.

July 23, 2022 at 5:52 pmTo the Key and Brown Families: I am so happy to know that Ramona lived her life with that vibrant personality she had when I met her as a neighbor in Jeffrey Wilson and as a classmate. She can now enjoy peaceful rest.
