Preston Douglas Vaughan, Jr.

Sunrise: November 21, 1942

Sunset: September 13, 2024

Preston Douglas Vaughan, Jr., father and friend, passed away on September 13, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Portsmouth, VA, on November 21, 1942, Preston was the oldest child of the late Preston D. Vaughan Sr. and Bernice Vaughan (née Pearson).

He spent the first 10 years of his life in his beloved Douglas Park before the family moved to Pine, now Peach, Street, within the Lee Ward/North Brighton neighborhood of Portsmouth, VA. This was a close-knit neighborhood, surrounded by his extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins. Preston grew up at Ebenezer Baptist Church, accepting Jesus Christ at an early age. He was a proud 1961 graduate of IC Norcom High School. Immediately after high school, Preston enlisted in the United States Air Force. This gave him an opportunity to see various parts of the world and ignited his love of travel. He longed to return to Taipei, Taiwan, one of his earliest posts, and often spoke fondly of his memories in Asia. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Preston took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled at Norfolk State University, graduating with a degree in accounting. He was not afraid of work and held various positions in account management, advertising, and sales across multiple companies, and even once owned a transportation business.

In the mid-1980s, Preston drove from Virginia to Northern California, where he lived for just over 10 years. He then moved to Denver, Colorado. He loved the Pacific coast, and his adventurous outlook allowed him to explore various parts of the country. Preston never missed an episode of Jeopardy, and his love for the ocean, travel, music, and his family was well-known.

After almost twenty years, he returned home to Portsmouth, VA. He took great pride in his neighborhood, serving as the President of the Lee Ward/North Brighton Civic League and as an active member of both the Portsmouth City Library Foundation and the Portsmouth City Planning Committee until his health prevented him from continuing.

Preston’s sense of humor, hearty laugh, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed.

Preston was the proud father of Camye Allen (Harvey), Damali Vaughan, and Kamau Vaughan (Yolanda). He was preceded in death by his brothers Cecil, Dwight, and Trammel. He is survived by his children and his memory will be treasured by his grandchildren Trinity Allen, Sophia Vaughan, Caleb Vaughan, Josefa Vaughan, special grandson Anthony Orque, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
