Pleasant A. Walker

Pleasant Walker was born on March 14, 1935, in Norfolk County, VA (now known as Chesapeake). She was an only child to Elsie and Henry Ricks. On December 25, 1959, she married Aldustus Walker.

True to her given name, Pleasant always welcomed people graciously. She avoided conflict but knew how to end it without raising her voice (and not even the dogs would talk back to her). She was an avid follower of Christ, spending afternoons listening to hymns on her CD player or the Sunday TV programs. Even after the COVID pandemic, she continued to tithe to Lee’s Chapel AME and tried tuning in to their services on her tablet (regardless of how she hated modern technology).

Pleasant enjoyed the simple things in life: collecting seashells at a lighthouse with her son, listening to her daughter play piano, watching soap operas in the afternoon with her granddaughter, and calling her grandson on Sundays to speak with his family. She loved to cook and enjoyed driving through neighborhoods to look at the Christmas lights.

She was the foundation of love for the family. Whether it was cooking more than what was asked of her for holiday meals (the favorites being her sweet potato pie and cherry pie), keeping sweet tea and Kool-Aid ready in the fridge, or sharing her homemade biscuits with or without the margarine spread, she always tried to please everyone. Pleasant always made sure her children could get the education they needed, whether helping her son with baseball and school work or making sure her daughter could continue to pursue her music passions, and she acted as a second mother to her grandchildren. It always brought a smile to her face to speak to her great-granddaughter on the phone or through video calls, and she enjoyed visits from family and close friends. She kept many photos from over the years, including snippets of family accomplishments in newspapers or commencement programs. (There are even posters of Obama in her china cabinet.) Her love even spread to close relatives and friends as she always sent holiday cards and called whoever she could. She made sure everyone special to her knew how much she cared.

From heaven, she watches over the following relatives: two children (Vivian and Kevin Walker), two grandchildren (Jacques and Terra Walker), and a great-granddaughter (Elara Walker), as well as extended family (Shweta Sakrikar), cousins, and friends. One of her last wishes is for her family to stay as close as they did while she still lived on earth.

Pleasant Walker has a guaranteed room with the Lord, and despite how much she will be missed here, she deserves to rest now after all of the hard work and kind spirit.
