Percy Cornelius Jones was born on August 6, 1922, in Newport News, Virginia to the late Norman and Mattie L. Jones. Percy went home to be with the Lord on June 18, 2022. His parents moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1928 where he attended John T. West Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School. Percy was preceded in death by his wife, Mary J. Jones, four siblings; Willie, Herbert, Lena, and Annette; his granddaughter, Katina LaNette Jones, and his daughter-in-law, Mary E. Jones.
Percy worked various jobs throughout Norfolk and Virginia Beach before joining the U. S. Navy in 1943, to serve in World War II. Percy was honorably, discharged in 1945. Upon his discharge, he returned to Booker T. Washington High School on a part-time basis, where he met and married Mary Geneva Johnson, August 7, 1948. They were blessed with three children Percy, Jr., George, and Ronnie and had a host of foster children.
After Percy’s marriage, he began a 35-year career with Norfolk Naval Air Station until he retired. He started serving with the Boy Scouts in 1959 becoming extremely active in council and district affairs. He collaborated with the Scouts for over twenty-five years. Additionally, Percy Jones volunteered for the Norfolk Food Bank for eighteen years and was an active and founding member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church (New Horizons) where he taught Sunday school, was assistant school superintendent, as well as a Deacon and Ruling Elder. Percy was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Percy C. Jones, Jr. of Jonesboro, GA, George Jones of Norfolk, VA, Ronnie Jones (Estelle) of Mechanicsville, VA, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, foster children, and friends.
